False. That can push the obstruction deeper and make you unable to dislodge it with either heimlich or back slaps. And it depends on how big a kid is. Problem is with “certified” first aid and cpr, most people aren’t that serious with it. I was an instructor, certified first responder and have performed cpr in several different instances, but when I took a work-required cpr class and was showing other students proper techniques, most laughed it off and poked fun of the force I was using during compressions. Then people get in this situation and unless you are well trained, all of that instruction goes straight out the window.

Yeah, you've got to be smart about it. You don't go digging with your finger to get it out, but if it's easily accessible, you grab it.

Yep agreed on the last bit. Only thing you have to watch is the bite. Best option would to have them leaning over to spit it out vs putting your finger in their mouth. But people can armchair quarterback these things all they want, but when it happens you hope you have done the right/best thing. It doesn’t always work out how you want it to though.

I've had this happen twice, once when she was two, and another when she was 3. First one was on egg yolk, second was on a sour warhead. Both times, I hear my wife screaming bloody murder and I run in to the room with my baby's face turning blue. I can't begin to tell you how scared I was when it happened.
The first time I didn't know what to do so I turned her face down and squeezed her ribs and stomach and hit on her back to get it up, literally almost lost her then. The second time on the warhead it burned her throat but eventually went down, not up, when I performed the H manouver on her. That's the last time she's had that candy.
