The problem involves a device known as a pretensioner, which uses a small, pyrotechnic charge, much like those found in airbags. But, in this case, they are designed to cinch a passenger’s seatbelt tight when a crash is detected to reduce the risk of injury or death.

Unfortunately, according to Ford, the seatbelt pretensioner system used on some F-150 models “can generate excessive sparks when they deploy.”

Complicating matters, gases created by the pretensioner “may ignite,” Ford said in a statement, adding that “if this gas ignites, components behind the B-pillar, such as insulation and carpet may subsequently catch fire.”

FYI. These are popular vehicles among people that post here.

The vehicles involved in the recall include those 2015 to 2018 model-year pickups produced at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan, plant from March 12, 2014, to Aug. 23, 2018, as well as those assembled at a plant in Kansas City from Aug. 20, 2014, to Aug. 23, 2018.

So... the Dearborn Ford plant accidentally produced suicide F150s?

Seems like they are over-complicating things with it.

Yea, not like Toyota ever had an issues that killed almost 100 people in resulted in recalling over 2 million vehicles.

IIRC, they've been around for decades. The older model ones basically fired a charge pulling the seatbelt backwards.

I remember when Chevy had a problem with their ignition switches that would cause the car to shut off while driving down the road. So, rather than fix the ignition, the fine folks at GM told everyone not to use a keychain, but rather a single key. If the car shut off while driving and they found you used a key with a key chain, they claimed they wouldn't be at fault.

I remember that Amazing that company with that level of brainpower needed a government bailout.

I think it only occurs when the seatbelt pulls. So if you are trapped in your truck after an accident, you get to worry about burning too.

2-4 parts per truck, 2 million trucks. That's a lot of recall work.

I got the recall letter and scheduled an appointment at the dealership to get it fixed. Dropped it off and waited for a couple hours. They called me, I went to pick it up, and the guy at the service desk handed me a single key and my key fob (which had a flip out key built into it) with the key removed. I asked him why they did that and he said that was the fix, not changing the ignition. I knew these car companies did some scumbag shite, but that one was pretty bad.

This is really going to blow up in Ford's face.
