re: 1999 divorcing couple splits Beanie Baby investment under supervision of a judge

The beanie baby "collectors" were insane. I had to deal with those idiots for a few years when I was a buyer for a retail gift store chain at the height of the bb lunacy. We were the largest dealer of Ty products in the area, so the nuts were in daily, stalking the stores, waiting for the shipments of new "babies" to be put on the shelves, and hiding them all over the building bc there was a limit as to how many were purchased in one day. I also had to hide & lock up new shipments of the crap so that employees wouldn't steal and/or hide them for themselves.
Ty did an incredible job of marketing & targeting lunatics with a decent amount of disposable income, although I came to despise that company as much as the crazies buying their stuffed animals. I will never forget walking into a rather wealthy customer's home to decorate it for Christmas, and seeing one of her trees she already had put up & decorated with nothing but beanies. Sickening.
I think I purchased a total of 3-4 for my child (who chewed on, tore, spit up on, etc., & I cut the Ty tag off of - cardinal sin to the nutjobs) & I do have a very rare Razorback that I sit out for Arkansas fb games along with my other Hog paraphernalia bc of my superstitious tendencies. ... Other than that, I do not care to see another beanie baby in my lifetime.

My sister collected them, so by default I thought they were for girls.

I still have my brothers baseball card collection from the 80's. All in protective sleeves in my dad's climate controlled storage unit. All different brands, all different sports (I just call them baseball cards).
Probably 10,000 of them and I bet maybe 5 of them are worth more than the paper they're printed on

I was making backroom, shady beanie baby deals all over the playground.

I collected cards like a mofo, and I sat my sister down and explained to her how much better of an investment my cards were than her Beanie Babies even showing her the value of my cards in Becket. She made $15K, and I've got a closet full of worthless cardboard

I can understand baseball card collectors much more than "adults" literally almost coming to blows over stuffed animals & stalking stores, repeatedly coming back a dozen times times per day. These people seriously had way too much time on their hands.
... Hilarious ... Reminds me of the collectors who would accost innocent customers walking in the store, shove money at them, & beg them to buy certain babies they'd already reached their limits on. Kind of like a 15 yr. old standing outside of a convenience store getting someone to buy him a six-pack.

Great job by your sis knowing when to sell.

I begged the owner of the chain I was buying for to let me just round up every beanie & Ty product from each store, put them all in a huge pile at the biggest location, advertise it, & just let the collectors have at it, buying as many as their hearts desired, so I could be done with it.

I store my beanie babies right next to my Iraqi Dinars.

Ehh they were big when I was between 8-10 years old. Since my parents wouldn't let me have video games or anything like that, I had to find ways to entertain myself on rainy days, so I loved playing with them and making lego houses/contraptions/tents for them.

I also remember our family entered a raffle at some craft store in Baton Rouge (it was right by Gary's Barber Shop near the overpass) to win the Princess Diana Bear. I'm sure you all remember that one. Well we won and got the bear, which was selling for like $500 on Ebay. Naturally we refused to sell such a valuable item, and the rest is history.
Is it possible that these things go up in value? And what led to their crash? Can you just go buy a beanie baby that was "worth" $1,000 in 1999 for $5 now?

Radar the Bat was my favorite
I remember getting him for my 9th birthday, and then met my dad up at his office at Rangers Ballpark(Globe Life Park or whatever the hell its called these days) and made copies of it on the copy machine until we went out for my birthday dinner.

Supply and Demand, no different than the Pokemon Card craze that followed it.
The problem was that it was a fad, so that artificially drove up demand. When the fad faded away and people moved on, the demand was no longer existant.
I remember at the height of the Pokemon Card Craze in the summer of 1999 and we were on vacation in New York City, we couldn't find Pokemon Cards anywhere. We finally found some at some store in Manhattan and they were going for $26.00 a booster pack.

Depends on who's willing to pay the price. I don't think many would anymore unless they just truly still love them & want rare ones for their own collections.

And what led to their crash?
Over saturation, greed, & way too much of a fad to last really long term.

I never kept up with "resale value" of them. To me, they were all "worth" $5. ... I highly doubt many would be willing to pay anything close to $1,000 for one any longer. I see older ones (judging by their "birth dates" on the tags) in Walgreens periodically, particularly during Valentine & Easter seasons, & are sold for $5.

"Sammy" is actually one of the very few I bought for my kid, only bc I loved the tie-dyed "fur."
... He's "retired," as are many of them, but he's still only "worth" $5 - actually, mine is worth much less since the tag is cut off, he's stained, & probably has an ear & eye missing.
