How tough is it to outrun a tornado in your car? Do they move that fast on the ground?

I always have and always will be terrified of tornadoes
Always just thought of tornadoes as a bit of an afterthought, then one hit my house about two months ago.
Pretty much just been sitting through tornado watches at least once a week the last two months.
fricking suck.

This one and the Andover tornado of 1991 which you saw the luxury homes with that monster right behind them are the two I always have been awed by.

Sucks when that shite hits at night though, one of the most unnerved I've been was realizing I was on a road at night, in an area that had spawned an f4. Had no idea which direction it was headed. Seemed as if wind was in every direction. Trees were falling, felt lucky to make it out.
Had no business being out in that, was 22 at the time, trying to go see a girl.

You're supposed to drive away from one at a 90 degree angle.

The Jarrell tornado was moving at 10 MPH.

You get it in baw? Was it worth it?
I do not envy you if not.

Definitely true. Night storms are the worst.
It seems like we've been getting drilled by night storms al Spring, which has suuuuuuuuucked.

This is an instance when you do the opposite of what the experts say and try to outrun that fricker. I mean, if you make it two miles away, then you live. If you stay, then you do, so you just as well take a chance and haul-as in your car.
yep, this is my plan A. Just GTFO out of the way, go opposite of the dark arse cloud, have my weather apps open and watch radar. In Oklahoma the radio stations broadcast the TV weather stations live so you can have a pretty good idea of where not to be while on the move.
eta: a couple years ago I watched a tornado touchdown just off NW Expwy in OKC. I was super pissed as I was in a meeting and just had an eerie feeling to look outside. My employer at the time hadn't even told anyone to take cover or took any sort of precautions. I put my notice in a few days later and moved away from OKC that month.

I did, but it was postponed for 3 hours. Ended up having to meet her at a hotel instead, roads were too fricked so we met at a comfortable location we both knew and could get to.

It really depends. The tornadoes moving through Alabama and Mississippi on April 27, 2011, were moving at speeds of about 60-70 MPH. The Jarrell tornado, however, was a slow mover and could have been easily outrun.

Not really, problem is congestion on the road, and trees blocking your sight lines at least in OK that is. Lots of storm chasers, both pros and amateurs. When you see the electric lines whipping up and down you know you're too close.
Just staying aware is the most important thing. When the conditions are favorable for tornadoes the worst thing to do is just going about your day like nothing could happen and you get caught w/ your pants down.

Another issue is that a lot of the really powerful ones have satellite vortices. It is theorized that is what killed the chasers during El Reno.

I was driving west on 1421 crossing Parmer when the tornado hit Albertsons on 183 and 1431 . I had moved to Austin the day before . I was thinking WTF.

I watched the NAT GEO documentary on the El Reno tornado. That was the most intense footage I've ever seen from storm chasers.
They tried to outrun it, but it kept changing directions. Unfortunately a few storm chasers lost their lives that day. They got caught in an exterior tornado(200+mph) that was wrapping around the main one.

Its slow speed is why it was so violent, and you easily could have outrun it.

Tornados scare me more than hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.
