151 Years Ago Today: All Confederate veterans receive a presidential pardon

quote:
In the aftermath of the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson on this day in 1868 issued pardons to all Confederate soldiers who fought in that conflict. The president extended “unconditionally, and without reservation ... a full pardon and amnesty for the offence [sic] of treason against the United States, or of adhering to their enemies during the late Civil War, with restoration of all rights, privileges, and immunities under the Constitution and the laws.”
In his Christmas Day Proclamation, Johnson said his action would “renew and fully restore confidence and fraternal feeling among the whole, and their respect for and attachment to the national [e.g., federal] government, designed by its patriotic founders for the general good.”

That’d be like the US invading Canada and then pardoning all Canadians who fought back

So legally speaking, the Confederate statues are of innocent men?

They’re considered statues of US veterans.

Oh, I'm a good old rebel,
Now that's just what I am,
And for this yankee nation,
I do not give a damn.
I'm glad I fought a ganner,
I only wish we won.
I ain't asked any pardon for anything I've done.
I hates the yankee nation and everything they do.
I hates the declaration of independence, too.
I hates the glorious union, t'is dripping with our blood.
I hates the striped banner, and fit it all I could
I rode with Robert E. Lee,
For three years, thereabout.
Got wounded in four places,
And I starved at point lookout.
I catched the rheumatism
A campin' in the snow.
But I killed a chance of Yankees
And I'd like to kill some more.
3 hundred thousand Yankees
Is stiff in southern dust.
We got 3 hundred thousand
Before they conquered us
They died of Southern Fever
And southern steel and shot
I wish there were 3 million
Instead of what we got.
I can't pick up my musket
And fight 'um down no more
But I ain't gonna love 'um
Now that is certain sure
And I don't want no pardon
For what I was and am
I won't be reconstructed
And I do not give a damn

You poor ignorant fool.
ETA: Downvote them all you want, but it won’t change the fact that unlike what progressives believe of Black Americans, they are quite capable of independent thought instead of blinding following what they’re told they have to be think by progressives all due to the color of their skin.

They’re considered US Veterans, by act of Congress.

Still traitors
Their grandfathers and great-grandfathers were considered traitors to the British crown. The only difference is the latter lost their war for independence.

One of the largest slave owners in the state of Louisiana was a black woman dipshit. There was black slave owners all over the south, most in LA and SC iirc.
You know where else on the earth history is constantly erased and rewritten, statues destroyed etc. Russia, the same place all these dipshits keeping saying Trump secretly works for while also protesting for statues to be destroyed and history forgotten. How ironic.

All things considered, a move like this seems like something that would get more recognition every year.
It’s actually a pretty big deal and symbolic thing.

On Sherman. If you haven’t, you should go read a bio on him. Ridiculously interesting life, would make a great movie.

He burned Atlanta so he's cool in my book.

American pop culture today abhors white Southerners. That's why this isn't viewed positively.

He was a union soldier though.
