Update:According to Sheriff Rene Thibodaux, a 13-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet while people were target practicing on the levee near Saizon Road in New Roads.

Sheriff Rene Thibodaux released the following statement:

Tonight, an awful tragedy occurred within our parish. A thirteen-year-old boy’s life was taken from being struck by a bullet that was discharged from a firearm by individuals who were reportedly target practicing.

I have taught gun safety to the youth in our parish for most of my adult life. I cannot stress the importance enough of knowing your target, the trajectory of a bullet, and what lies beyond that intended target. The family of this child will not be celebrating Thanksgiving or Christmas with their beloved boy. Please keep his family and our community in your prayers.

POINTE COUPEE PARISH, La. (WAFB) - The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a deadly shooting on Friday, Nov. 18.

According to Sheriff Rene Thibodaux, a 13-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet while people were target practicing.

Officials have not yet released the name of the boy who was killed.

The investigation remains ongoing.

I bet that's some guy setting up targets with no legit backstop or berm and thinks a random tree's going to stop his bullet. Whoever did this should be prosecuted for negligent homicide and sent to prison.

My brother and I were on an old abandoned pipeline with fallen trees and brush hunting quail.

Some guys set up and started shooting target practice from above shooting down the hill towards us. A bullet hit a dead tree right beside us. We jumped behind that tree and laid low, started shouting as loud as we could and fired off a couple of rounds to let them know we were there.

After a few minutes we came out and went up the hill, but whoever it was had booked it. Never found out who it was.

Got rained down on while duck hunting once. Flooded timber. Walk in spot. We did the same and never found out who it was

There are idiots like that all over the place. I always set my targets so the bullet goes safely in to the ground, but a lot of folks don't think beyond the target.

I didn't read the story. I have shot a 22 into a muddy berm like 30ft and the bullet would come back out and pass us. Doubt it would kill you but would probably put out an eye. Stopped after a few and realized what was going on.

What if that was actually an attempted assasination?

Is the river down enough there that they were on river side of levee shooting towards Saizon (or other streets) and then missed high over the levee?

With the amount of people who do dumb shite with guns, I would say the 13 year old being hit by a stray bullet is more likely.

There are a lot of people who don't respect the gun they are using. A friend of mine works at a gun range and the stories he tells me its pretty crazy. Its usually the older teenagers, kids in their early 20s.. Who think they know it all

The child’s parents are good friends of mine. Still a lot of details not released but sounds like the boys were riding 4 wheelers on the levee when he was struck by a stray bullet. Not sure the set up the shooters were using but they are in custody. Really really tragic!

Two arrested after 13-year-old was shot and killed in target practice accident, deputies say.

quote:

NEW ROADS - Two men were arrested after a 13-year-old boy was struck and killed by a stray bullet in a target practice accident Friday evening.

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office said the incident happened around 5 p.m. on the Mississippi River levee by Saizon Road in New Roads. The 13-year-old was riding his four-wheeler on the levee when he was hit by a stray bullet from a nearby group target practicing.

Saturday, officials said Quentin Leonard II, 31, and Donell Francois Jr, 33, were arrested for their involvement in the accident. They were spotted Friday evening shooting rifles along the side of the levee, and one of the bullets struck the boy.

Neighbors told WBRZ they saw the pair shooting down the levee toward paper targets while a couple of teens were riding around on four-wheelers. They said that's when one of them was shot in the back.

Leonard and Francois were each booked into the Pointe Coupee Parish Jail for illegal discharge of a firearm and manslaughter. More charges may be added as the investigation continues, officials say.

"I have taught gun safety to the youth in our parish for most of my adult life," said Pointe Coupee Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux. "I cannot stress the importance enough of knowing your target, the trajectory of a bullet, and what lies beyond that intended target. The family of this child will not be celebrating Thanksgiving or Christmas with their beloved boy. Please keep his family and our community in your prayers."

The sheriff's office has not yet released the identity of the 13-year-old boy.

I'd be willing to wager the kid on the 4-wheeler had permission to be on the property while the target shooters did not.

Not sure they should be shooting down either side, but which side of the levee were they shooting down?

And shot in the back??? If kids riding on levee and shot in back it seems like they would have been in view if shooting down same levee (on top of hearing 4 wheelers).

My understanding is the shooter had set a target 20' up in the air and was trying to shoot 3/4 mile with a 6.5 creedmore. Missed and the bullet hit the kid on the levee
