quote:A clip from the "Hollywood goes to War" documentary I linked before, showing Erich Von Stroheim, "The Man You Love To Hate", as the Bestial Hun officer.
Some of the WWI propaganda is wild
One of the things he does is really jaw dropping.

That's hilarious and tragic.

My great-grandfather enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1914 and served with the 65th Coastal Artilley in France in 1918. He participated in the St. Miheil and Meuse-Argonne offensives. He was discharged on June 3, 1920. I have the slide rule he used to measure the angle of fire for his artillery pieces.
My wife's great-grandfather is the gentleman seated. He was a medic in the Royal Medic Corps and was wounded at Gallipoli. He later served in France and Belgium from 1916-1918. Two of his sons stand behind him. The one over his left shoulder served with the Northumberland Fusilars and was taken prisoner in 1917. The son over his right shoulder served in the Royal Flying Corps in 1918. He made a career of it; he stayed in the RAF until 1922 and then served in the Royal Australian Air Force through World War II and the Korean War. 35 years of service.

My paternal grandfather was at Fort Sill, OK training to ship overseas when his group was decimated by Spanish Influenza.
They were so weakened as a unit that they didn't go overseas.
He was a Black Jack Pershing fan, named one of his sons John Joseph Pershing _______.
Another of his sons (my father) wasn't lucky enough to miss combat.
Okinawa.
