10 Years Ago Today I Quit Smoking

Today is March 8. Today marks 10 Years since I quit smoking. Sure, I've gained 50 or 60 pounds, but this is also what quitting smoking has allowed me to do:
1.) I've saved almost $48,000 (I was a heavy smoker) that I would have spent on smoking 150,000 cigarettes.
2.) It has allowed me to go on four "Vacations of a Lifetime" to the following cities: Italy--Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Ferrara, Verona; Germany--Munich, Dachau; Prague, Czech Republic; Bratislava, Solovakia; Budpest, Hungary; Vienna & Salzburg, Austria; and Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Dubbo, Carinda, Newcastle, and The Hunter Valley (Australia).
*supposed to leave for London/Paris soon, but that may be put on hold due to COVID-19.
3.) My travels have introduced me to some great cultures and experiences. I got to see "The Birth of Venus" with my own eyes; I stood where Charlemagne is said to have been crowned Holy Roman Emperor; I was General Maximus Decimus Meridius, if only for a moment; I saw-a da freakin-a Pope-a in person; Walked in Hitler's footsteps; and I hung around with Kangaroos, Wallabies, and a Wombat with a lousy disposition; I got to ring in the new year in Sydney Harbour, watch cricket, rugby, and Aussie football matches, and walk in the footsteps of David Bowie. Last year I spent a week sharing the culture and food of South Louisiana with “The Four Aussies” I have met on my travels, including 4 days in New Orleans for Mardi Gras.( Even going to my first Endymion Ball). I got to drink some great beer and great wine and eat some great food all over the world.
4.) My travels have introduced me to some amazing people with whom I am still in contact, and who I consider to be friends, some of whom I now consider to be family.
5.) I was able to purchase my first home because I'm not squandering $600 a month on cigarettes.
There are many reasons to quit smoking, but the FREAKING MONEY YOU SAVE has got to be near the top.
Here's to 10 more years smoke free. And five after that...
TL;DR: Quit Smoking, Save Money.

If you spent $13/day on smoking, you must live in NYC or Michigan where cigs have been astronomically priced for years.
8 years without tobacco this June.

Sounds like a good time but you should cut that extra weight off.

Just think of all the places you could go if you would quit eating so much

This. The weight gain the OP experienced isn’t related to smoking cessation per se, he just replaced one addition for another. One that will still wind up killing him.

If you quit eating so much you might have enough money to go to Japan

Y'all are straight up assholes. The man quit smoking, which is an addiction that's three times harder to quit than heroin. Give the guy a break for crying out loud.
quote:bullshite. It absolutely is. When you quit smoking, it's all about oral fixation. And it's also about the fact that your taste buds actually start working right again, so food tastes better. Everybody, and I mean everybody who quits smoking will gain 40-50 lbs until they finally decide to lose it.

I smoked cigs at all of these places.

It will be 10 years for me on the 20th. I went pagan and used the vernal equinox as motivation. Good job!

Of course. I need a mirror, but I can still see both glorious inches.

I think I gained like 3-4 pounds, then lost 7-8 because I started exercising. Net win. Granted I'm only 165 lbs, so not much to gain or lose.
Congrats to OP. I can't really say I quit because I'll have maybe half a dozen a year, but I'm no longer a slave to them like I was eight years ago.

March 9th will make 6 years for me! I picked it up when i was freshman in college - smoked a pack a day for about 12 years, then weened back to a few per day unless I was at a bar and i was a freight train. I dropped it completely and didn't really have many problems with relapsing.

Quit in Nov of 2018 and have definitely gained some weight. But I think I truly have it licked this time. Started dieting right after Christmas and lost about 15lbs. Went off the rails for Mardi Gras, but back at it.
