All the advice to "learn how to swim" and "teach your kids how to swim" is great, but equally important is to know how to read the water and to understand just how incredibly dangerous open water can be.
And learn how to not panic in a difficult situation. You can be the strongest swimmer on the planet, if you panic, it's over.

I think this tragedy will hopefully cause more parents to do the same.

How does the moon being full cause a strong current? I know noting about tides, but the moon phase is just the amount of light that hits the moon and the dark part is blocked by earth. But the moon is still there and the same size... with the same gravitational pull on the oceans.
Tides are caused by the moon AND the sun. During a full moon the sun and moon are aligned, i.e., the earth is on a straight line between the sun and moon. This amplifies the tidal effects.

Different water deaths. Article mentions how difficult waterfall made diving to bring bodies up along with ice cold water but also mentions some cold shock warnings in area. Waterfall seems to be pushing down a huge amount of water if they jumped in near it.

This seems like drownings as at least in picture water doesn’t seem to as forceful, but I don’t know if the “pool” featured in article is the specific one they drowned in.

Three hikers have died after jumping into a California waterfall to cool off, and never resurfacing.
On June 18, six outdoorsmen set out on a hike several miles into the woods near Soda Springs. They embarked on what officials have said was an 'extremely remote and difficult to access' trail.
During the journey, three of the hikers decided to jump into Rattlesnake Falls, leaving three others behind.
The men in the water didn't resurface. After a three-day search for their bodies, they were retrieved on Monday. before 3 pm, the remaining hikers contacted local authorities for help.
The men have since been identified as Valentino Creus, 50, of Los Angeles, Matthew Schoenecker, 50, of Los Angeles, and Matthew Anthony, 44, of New York City.

Two sisters drowned when they entered a pool after travelling to Snowdonia with university friends, an inquest has heard.
Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, were pulled from pools on the Watkin Path, which leads to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, in North Wales last Wednesday.
Inquests into the deaths of the women who lived in Maltsby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire but were born in Pakistan were opened today.
Assistant coroner for north-west Wales Sarah Riley said: 'Hajra and Haleema had travelled to the Nant Gwynant area with friends from university.
'They have entered the water and sadly both died as a result of drowning.'

The pass at the southern end AMI is can be hairy as the tide moves with swiftness through there.
