I agree. "Sofa Scram" or anything aversive will usually work but he would appreciate the dog bed as an alternative when the device is on the couch during the training period.

Does he have a nice cushy bed near the couch? Our 15 year old dog was always on the sofa. She was very ill last November and unable to get up on couch. Bought her a nice cushy bed and placed it at end of the couch. She rarely gets on the couch now, prefers her bed. Can't blame her for not laying on the floor because it's cold hard slate and she has old bones.
If you haven't gotten him a nice cushy bed, you might try that.

IMO you let a 10 year old dog do what they want, but I'm a sucker.

At 10 years old, I wouldn't do anything too drastic. Dog probably doesn't have more than a few years left anyway.

Seriously, they have large dog beds that are mini couches.
This sweet Doggy I met asked me for the best way to get his beta owner to stop sitting on his couch. He said he has let you for the last 10 years but now he is fed up. He mentioned your affinity for fat girls and said maybe we could possibly lure you off of his couch with one.

Same problem here. Someone told me to put a long sheet of foil on couch. They hate the sound and feel of it and now do not jump on furniture.
You are welcome.

X mat will keep them off if you are determined to do it.

I also had Ridgeback that did the same thing. I would flip the cushions up and he was smart enough to flip them down and still get on the sofa in the middle of the night. He had his own very large bed and we also praised him using it. It helped some but as soon as I would turn my back he would be back on the sofa or sneak in the guest bedroom and sprawled out on the bed. Good luck on breaking him now at 10 years old. They can be very head strong dogs.
