About half an hour ago, the doctor told us surgery was over, everything went well, but he needs some blood right now, and they will probably be giving him more later today. We should be able to see him within the next half hour from now, hopefully.

I am not ashamed to say that I teared up a little in my office out of joy for you, your wife, little Zachary, and your family when I read this. My prayers are with you all for continued progress and good news.

God Bless.

As an outsider looking in, the amount of support that the O-T board is giving the OP during this is making my arm hair stand up. As much $hit as you guys get around TD.com, I am very happy to see you support the OP during this tough time. Keep up the good work because all the prayers are working!

To the OP, stay strong because your little man needs you to. He's looking to you in one way or another to get him through this. Perfectly ok to breakdown in the car, shower or the crapper but in front of him show him that everything is going to be good....because it is.

Sending good vibes your way.

That's why I wasn't hesitant to post it here to begin with. My son's surgery is pretty minor compared to what some posters have gone through with their kids, but I know the OT doesn't troll these types of threads.

Wife has been reading the comments in this thread too. We truly appreciate all the support.

Excellent news, man.

These kinds of things, they make you a better father and husband. Obviously not wishing these types of trials on anyone, but going through fire does indeed temper us.

Man, nothing is working for his pain management. After the first round of morphine wore off earlier this afternoon, they started with Motrin, but he was starting to come out of his anesthesia stupor, so that wasn't working. So they added Tylenol. Gave that another hour or so, still obviously in pain, so it's back to morphine as of 15 minutes ago. Still screaming. Still won't eat anything. (Hasn't had anything but a few sips of glucose water in over 17 hours).

Hoping it'll be better tomorrow. Just not sure how this kind of pain can be managed at home with ibu and acetaminophen.

The anesthesia can cause an infant/young child to be hyper excitable and irritable when it is wearing off. He may have a bit of a sore throat too. Quiet, low lighting and little to no stimulus except when necessary will help calm him. Should be ok even if he has not eaten for some time since he would have received IV fluids with dextrose (sugar). I would think he is still receiving IV fluids. Most important is quiet, low stimuli. Hope all continues to go well. Bless you and your family.

ETA: bone has no nerve endings, so no pain related to bone manipulation. Incisional pain is a given and if he has a head dressing in place it is probably ticking him off. Sweet baby.

Hang in there. Take care of yourself and make sure your wife takes care of herself. Be sure to eat. It's easy to get so wound up that you feel you can't eat. When that little tiger comes around you and your wife will need all the energy you can muster. And try to take shifts sleeping so you are not completely exhausted. It's going to get better.

seeing someone you love in pain is just terrible...I have never felt more helpless than in that situation...

it is tough on yall, but the only bright spot is that he won't remember a bit of it...and in a few weeks, it will be nothing more than a bad memory to the rest of you...

fwiw, don't worry about pain management at home until time to check out of the hospital...at that point, if you don't feel comfortable with it, ask the doc if you can stay another night...

Yeah, it may be more disorientation than pain. In which case the morphine probably didn't help.

He does have head dressing on. Lack of stimuli is difficult when nurses have to check him near hourly, and this machine goes BEEEP BEEEP MOTHERfrickER every time he breathes different.

Finally got him to take about 2 oz of enfamil. He's gone from screaming to now snoring and occasionally squealing and whimpering, so hopefully he's more comfortable for now.

Worst part about them crying is not being able to do anything about it.

The nurse told us that the doc will let us go home tomorrow if he can go without morphine starting after midnight. Hoping that will be the case.

"Wow, this hospital cot is comfortable" would be a great trigger phrase for a sleeper agent.
