I think when you see it now, it is tongue-in-cheek type of responses to when he was doing a lot of the same things, but hitting on his big moves more often than not. He was making a lot of these same big moves while strapped against the cap and able to field those superior teams from 2009 - 2013 (team understandably got a pass for 2012).
This was the time frame I recall the genius label starting to get thrown around. Unfortunately, this is also when he started really swinging for the fences and missed big a few times that really set the team back

was excellent at what he did, and still is actually. The problem is kicking the can down the road was always supposed to be a rare thing on players that you had to keep like Brees, Jordan, Armstead.. you know franchise players.
Mickey got addicted to the drug and now every contract is structured that way and the monster is controlling him instead of him controlling the monster. He can't even bite the bullet and suck for a few years to clear it up because he has to restructure every contract he can to clear 50-80 million every year just to get to the starting line in March.
Right.
I tried to point this out a couple years ago. I HD no problem with doing it to the stars. Now he is doing it on every contract for no reason.
Guys like foster moreau are having fake years added to their contracts with dead money.

He had a once in a generation QB for most of his tenure. I think he did a good job of retaining pieces around Drew to maximize that window. He can't control what happens on the field, but we were in position to win multiple SBs. If Drew retires with 2 or 3 rings, the sentiment would be a whole lot different. Everyone knew the time to pay the tab would come once Brees was gone. The thing I disagree with, is signing Carr and pretending like the window wasn't closed with an ageing roster and Payton leaving, but I'm sure it was Allen's decision. I'd be curious to know how much Loomis is actually involved in personnel decisions or if he's just handed a wish list and asked to make it work.

Rumor was, this was basically the case when Sean was here. Not sure they gave DA that kind of control. With Harley & Ireland in the house, he probably turned the personnel decisions over to them and he just makes it work.

Crazy to think that if you remove 2005 - 2021, if they win this weekend, the team's record under him will be .500.

He's not much on talent evaluation but he is one hell of an accounting wizard. The guy probably could have run one hell of a Ponzi scheme if he didn't choose football.
Actually some might say that he's been running the Saints like a Ponzi scheme and we're now hitting the back end where it all comes crashing down.

He's doing all that can be done to navigate the cap hell the team is in. No other person could could be brought in and do anything any different. It's a shite sandwich that has to be eaten and fans just have to accept it or not but it's happening.
Is he really though?
He seems to continue to make moves that aren’t allowing us to eat said shite sandwich.

This doesn't make him a bad GM it makes him and out of control addict. You're not going to fire him and have anyone else come in and be able to do anything any different.
I know we tend to get in trouble for bringing up politics in none political threads, but I think it legit applies here. What you described sounds a lot like the United States Government and the way they always have to increase the budget.
