It's official. You're dumb.

During the 80s and 90s, the Saints and 49'ers were division rivals. Despite the Saints having many great teams with The Dome Patrol, they couldn't quite beat out the 49'ers. San Francisco went home with Superbowl Wins while the Saints couldn't even win a playoff game.

check the Saints all time record against the 49ers and you'll have your answer
The record alone doesn't tell the story. The only time pre Payton/Brees that the Saints were good, the 49ers were a dynasty standing in our way. On top of that we found some ridiculous ways to lose games we should have won against them. The emotional scars vs. the 49ers run pretty deep but I had actually gotten over it until they knocked Pierre Thomas out in the playoff game. That single hit cost us the game and reopened the wound like it had never healed.

add in the damage of the refs learning heavily in the 49ers favor doesn't help. We lost a few games because of the stripes not making correct calls in those eras

For the benefit of the OP- after decades of being perennial losers, the Saints under Jim Mora became very good. Basically an exact match of the New York Giants; same stout defense, same power running game, but with better special teams and the best kicker of the era. The Giants won, what, 2, 3 Super Bowls in that era. The Saints could have too, but they were always stuck in 2nd place behind the 49ers. No matter the record, they were always in the wildcard game (and yep, lost those games).
Divide the league as it is today, and the Saints would have been a division winner a bunch of times. Who knows how the playoff games would have broken then.
