He’s failed horribly as a coach. But he’s been a respectable DC for quite a few years. Usually DCs seem to be tough and kinda alpha type coaches, DA is the opposite. I get being a good coordinator doesn’t make you a good head coach. I just don’t get even how he was successful as a DC? Good game plan, prep, play calling, defensive coaching? I’d be curious what the defensive players who played under him as a DC think about him as a head coach

Ever had a job in high school or college where the shift manager was really good until he got promoted to the entire store manager? Basically the same thing. He didn't have to worry about setting culture, just following sean's. He didn't have to worry about discipline, sean did that. He basically had to worry about gameplanning and that's it.

Some guys just aren't able to do the command the entire battlefield, just a task unit is more in their wheelhouse.

When he focuses on just defenses he has had a lot of success.

I know this goes against the current trend of thinking but I actually believe most of the players like and respect DA. IMO the lack of respect and total lack of trust on the part of the players centers around Carmichael and others on the O staff.

I take Jameis Winston at his word when he stated he apologized to coach Allen but precariously stopped short of apologizing to coach Carmichael who it's been widely reported on that HE called the play.... Dennis signed off on it and when Jamies and maybe others approached Allen about getting the TD for Williams Allen stuck with his OC and said no.

Ultimately they went against Allen and he's the HC so... But I believe that if any FU disrespect was meant (Which I do not) it was directed ar Carmichael.

To my point I believe most of the players like and respect Allen as a coach and as far as the locker room goes HE isn't the problem. Obviously there are some older veterans that are bumping heads with him as has been reported and they will likely be gone because of it but the key will be if DA keeps Carmichael or pulls the trigger in the O staff. I think If he keep Carmichael he will lose a lot of the locker room next season and they will not have trust in DA to see the problem and make the corrections.

The fake kneel TD muddies the waters on making that decision for him I believe but it shouldn't.

I will say the defense got noticeably worse when DA had to start focusing more on the offense. I imagine that is why he wants to bring in Gruden so Gruden can essentially be the HC of the offense with him being the HC of the defense.

The defense is old but Allen really should take a long look at his position coaches on defense as well. with all the firings there are bound to be options to upgrade many of these positions.

The one thing that Allen can not afford to do is stand pat and roll out the same staff expecting that the only problem was players. Which by all accounts they are not doing.

i would be hesitant to call him good, he was average to better than average.

every year there was no defense until game 4-5 and then they get better until end of year to be good. then the next year, with the same exact players that are in the same system running the same plays, they are once again a no show for the first 4-5 games.

so his history is his players cant go from one year to the next, and have any idea how to play as a team and run the same plays they ran the year before.

the last few years he got a little bit better and we wouldnt need 5 games before the defense was ready to play. i dont think that was DA doing that improvement, but it was more that long time vets were able to make up for DAs incompetence at coaching

Absolutely this. There are so many examples of excellent, respected coordinators being bad HCs. DA reminds me of Wade Phillips in that way. Very different personalities--Wade is an awesome dude and super nice--but guys who improve defenses as DC but suck as HCs.
