I mean, the only reason Patrick Mahomes is a Chief right now is because Payton let everyone know he was after him weeks before the 2017 draft. On draft day the Chiefs moved up to #10 while the Saints were selecting at #11. Patrick Mahomes has won the super bowl 3 times and has been to the AFC championship 6 straight years. If word hadn't gotten out about the Saints wanting Mahomes, Payton would've had another superstar QB and probably would still be coaching the Saints.

It wasn’t the rumors that caused the Chiefs to jump the Saints and draft Mahomes. Mahomes called Reid and told him to come get him or he’d be drafted by New Orleans. Mahomes has admitted this several times in interviews since, he drove the process so he didn’t have to sit behind Brees
