We don’t have an opportunistic defense

I keep sing people saying this is similar to 09, a great offense and opportunistic defense and that can’t be further from the truth.
This defense isn’t just getting turnovers, they’re absolutely shutting teams down in both the run and passing game. I think we are top 5 in most defensive stats since week 2.
I hope more people realize we have a dominant defense, not just opportunistic.

I’ll tell you what kind of defense we have.
We’re a defense who’s strong against the run on the first two downs.
This forces a lot of 3rd and 4’s +.
This allows for our secondary (the strength of our defense) to shine, and allows for the front to be aggressive and send 5 or 6.
Sometimes they don’t need to and they opt for coverage.
Even still their technique is sound and talent enough to generate pressure.
This makes it hard for teams to sustain drives and get points.

Our d is a Bobby Wagner away from being elite.

Do you think having a great year on D might attract a high value free agent this offseason? Maybe a great edge pass rusher to go along side Cam? Or maybe a elite LB? I think that is the only missing piece to being an elite defense.

They showed a stat yesterday that the Saints already have 4 non offensive TDs this season (Yes the blocked punt was one)
They had 3 from 2013-2016. (48 games)
The Saints have 12 takeaways in 8 games.
The Saints are 7th in interceptions with 9.
They are 10th in differential.

We also have 45 pass defenses, which is 3rd in the league. One of the teams ahead of us (Eagles) has played an extra game.
The Bills are killing it though with 56 passes defensed and 11 picks, both top marks. It's going to be a good test and we need to get the run game going and just take what Buf gives us through the air.

I actually agree, we've dropped a ton of picks, especially the LBrs.
I know that wasn't quite your argument, but may also help it. We're much better straight up than we've been since we had that top 5 defense in 2010.

Pat, the dude on your podcast needs to let you speak. I’d like to hear your thoughts on thing as well instead of just him talking for 30 minutes

Exactly. We’ve produced some turnovers sure... but we are just punching offenses in the mouth and shutting their arse down in the run and pass game. We don’t need turnovers to be successful... hell we held Tamp to 200 yards of offense, 4 first downs and we had 4 sacks. And they were a pretty high ranked offense coming into the game

This just sounds so weird to say considering our history but it's dead on. Much as I wanted to strangle Dennis Allen after the first two games having a former DB coach as your D coordinator seems to paying off.

I’ve been talking more lately.
The past 6 months I’ve been going through personal issues and wasn’t really feeling up to recording and I just tended to let him have at it.
