Sorry but some of you are fricking clueless about abuse. It is very hard for them to leave.
The most dangerous time for a woman in a physically abusive relationship is the moment she attempts to leave him.

So what was the extent of this horrific abuse? Love how the article doesn't talk about the main point of the article...the abuse.
Terrifying? Yes
Illegal? No
He can do with what he owes and if they are married whatever is hers is his and vice verse. He can break he shite all he wants. What was the abuse?

Smith-Williams notes that Hasslet told her that taking the fall for her husband was not a good idea, which years later caused her to silence herself about her husband’s illegal activities even after he took a baseball bat to their entire house.

You think these women, one of which would only consent to this anonymously, are doing this for fame?
Yes

Nope, elaborate
Well of course we all know Haslett/Mueller were the toast of the town following the franchise's first playoff win in the 2000 season.
But in 2002, Mueller was unexpectedly fired by Tom Benson. Benson never really explained why exactly Mueller was let go. There were a few rumors: He was fired for letting key defensive players like La'roi Glover and Joe Johnson get away; he was fired for playing golf at Augusta on the company credit card without permission.
But eventually it became known that Mueller participated in a cover up where Saints funds were used to pay for an abortion for a Saintsations cheerleader after she was impregnated by Jim Haslett. I've actually read rumors on the interwebs that he got TWO Saintsations pregnant, but I've never put much stock in THAT one. Once Benson got wind of what was going on, Mueller was fired. Presumably Haslett was kept on because, as of 2002, he was still the one of the most popular public figures in New Orleans....and so he was given some leeway.
ETA: This is not internet speculation/rumor. People in the local (national?) media are aware of this.

It's a very well known story.

No offense meant, but it amazes me that people still think Joe Horn had an affair with Roaf's wife.
Even Roaf admitted it was Joe Johnson.

I sniff a mighty big lawsuit in the near future against the NFL for what is being reported as complete lack of uniform control and investigation of domestic violence.
Why is it the employer's responsibility to investigate domestic issues? The only fault I could see of the NFL is if they intentionally paid off cops or whatnot to avoid criminal prosecution against their players. The organization telling the women to keep quiet is shitty also, but unless they used threatening tactics I don't know if that is illegal.
The real blame should fall on the cops that apparently failed to investigate the accusations. If you're being abused, don't call your abusers employer to ask for help, call the cops. It is their responsibility to enforce the law, not the NFL's.
This whole thing is more a PR nightmare for the NFL rather than a legality issue.
