I thought he was much improved this season. Obviously he will never be a standout coverage guy, but I think we could cut vaccaro and slide bell into his spot next season with little to no drop off.

What do y’all think?

No doubt about it. He's a Vaccaro a clone on a cheaper deal for 2 more years. Clearly lacks coverage skills though unfortunately.

I think he’s better than Kenny Vacarro for whatever that’s worth

I’m not saying he’s the long term solution but we cut vacarro to save money, get about the same production from bell for a few years while we try to find the long term solution through the draft or FA.

I thought Vaccaro played very well until he had to start dealing with injuries

Vaccaro is garbage. Tired of people caping for him because he’s a “unique player.”

Draft Ronnie Harrison and let Bell handle heavy run situations

He's actually really good against the run & has 5.5 sacks as well after that last playoff game. I don't have a problem with him if we can limit his pass coverage responsibilities.

Assuming we don't re-sign Vaccaro in the offseason...we're going to need a legit coverage Safety to play the slot. Free agent or 3rd/4th round pick. I'll take Bell as an in the box Safety for run support & blitzing the QB. He's legit in those 2 areas. He forces fumbles as well.

Unless he drastically improves his pass coverage...we probably let him walk in 2 years after his contract is up. I guess we could re-sign him if he's willing to take a VERY team friendly deal. He's young & athletic, so he has that going for him I guess.

Learn to spell his name correctly if you're starting a thread about him.

Very average. Need a coverage linebacker to hide him a little.

Thought he'd improve, but hasn't taken that next step. Good against the run though, so he had that going.

Hopefully Anzalone can be that guy next year. Definitely need either a LB or Safety (hopefully both) that's legit in coverage to mask Bell's shortcomings. He still has 2 more years on a rookie deal, so he isn't going anywhere.

Guys like Vonn Bell make you realize how much of a transition from college to the NFL is. Almost every draft guru thought that he was the best coverage Safety in the entire draft, but he needed to get better in run support (that's why he slipped to the late 2nd round). Literally, the exact opposite ended up happening.

He does tackle through players. He hits and falls off.

from Bell's draft report:

quote:

Has man cover talent. Instincts and reaction time are big assets. Trusts his eyes and fires downhill as soon as he reads throw. Capacity to meet ball at the catch point more than most cover safeties. Credited with 23 passes defensed over last two seasons. Able to mirror targets and strike a centered blow when flowing downhill. Plays with excellent feel for his responsibilities in space. Sifts through route combinations and always gets to his guy. Rarely out of position.

quote:

Weak against the run, allows running backs to get on top of him and deliver the first blow. Drag down tackler without much thud.

how ironic

I've said all season that he is average at best. Very poor in coverage never being in the right place. Was constantly criticized by this board but it is a fact. Hope he continues to develop. Not a fan of Vaccaro but hopefully we extend him for 1 more year. Can't afford to draft another safety this year without our 2nd. And since we drafted safeties in the 2nd round in each of the last 2 drafts.

At least Marcus Williams' draft report was right

quote:

STRENGTHS Athletic and instinctive from high safety. Easy hips with smooth feet in his backpedal. Able to play from deep positioning and still make plays on the ball. Good recognition of quarterback?s intentions gives him a head-start on the throw. Has desired open-field speed to close from hash to sideline. Former basketball player and high-jumper with the leaping ability and timing to win the 50-50 throws. Posted 10 interceptions against 44 targets over last two seasons. Productive tackler and careful finisher. Steps downhill against the run. Leverages ball carriers to the sideline and rarely lets him cross back over into middle of the field. Gathers feet and widens out to unfurl a wider tackling net.
