Tom Benson bought the team in 1985, since 1986 the Saints have only had 5 seasons with double digit loses. 1 of those was the Katrina year 3-13 the other 4 were Mora’s last season and the 3 years with Ditka. 3-13, 6-10 6-10 3-13. After taking over a 3-13 team, with out a first round pick thanks to the Ricky Williams trade, losing Williams AND QB Jeff Blake Jim Hasslett still went 10-6 won the division and the Saints first ever playoff game.

Mrs Benson has shown a willingness to spend and Loomis and Ireland have done a good job drafting. If they bring a good coach and of course find a QB, no reason the Saints can’t continue to be good. Don't try to replicate Payton and Brees, that won’t happen but you can build a winning team lots of different ways.

As long as we keep drafting like we have, we should be fine.

Super elite? Maybe not, but fine.

If we get a great coach, we should be really good more years than not.

Benson was successful early because he let Jim Finks run things. Make no mistake, Payton was the brains behind the Saints’ success. Saints are toast without him guiding things.

It boils down to a) hiring a good coach and b)finding a QB. It doesn’t even have to be an elite QB, Jimmy G is going for his 2nd SB in 3 years

Oh please, Payton was great but he’s not literally the only good football guy out there. You guys got to get over the zero sum mentality and catastrophe syndrome. The Saints weren’t terrible with Haslett and Aaron Brooks

Ireland and Loomis will keep us having great players. I don’t see Allen succeeding unless Carmichael is a QB whisperer like Payton and can mentor whatever young QB we bring in.

Allen can have some success if Carmichael steps up. He doesn’t want to be a HC so there’s no threat of him leaving unless he retires early too. I think that’s what it will come down to.
