My fear with Fairley is he played well last year because it was a 1 year put up or shut up deal.

I hope his past laziness does not creep in.

I disagree. Not to knock Onyemata, I think he'll be good, but you need a good rotation to be a good defense.

Fairly, Rankins, Davidson and Onyemata is sneaky good.

I think a legit RG & Fairley are our 2 biggest needs.

Should be able to afford 1 more position and then use the draft for the rest.

exactly. the running joke all last season was "vet min, prove it." so when a guy actually does outperform his contract, people are scared the Saints will then compensate him for doing his job? this is how business works. Fairley seems to have matured some and will do very well with rotating.

A prove it deal doesn't mean he is only proving it to your team.

This is the type of move that never works out for the Saints

Obviously this means it'll never happen then right?

so every signing is the same? this logic is horribly flawed. you are scared to re-sign a guy who balled out for you and go with an unknown to fill that void instead of retaining the player?

Just remember the reasons he was in line for only a 1yr deal last year. Those things just don't disappear. There absolutely is logic in that

So to be clear, you would prefer to ignore last year's performance and let Fairley walk instead of building upon last year and continuing to improve our defense?

All this based on an impending contract to retain him?

it doesn't concern you that he played really well in his contract year, based on the grumblings we've heard about his character?

Yea, I'd rather pass. I'm not ignoring last year. I'm questioning if he has the motivation to repeat that

He dreamed of playing for the Saints one day. His dream came true and he balled out.

Is he all of a sudden going to stop playing hard for his dream team when he gets paid? Maybe, but my money is on no.

And on Onyemata replacing Fairley, Fairley just had an incredible season for a DT. No doubt Onyemata keeps developing but you keep Fairley around to help teach him and to pair then together.

Having 3 great DTs is a boon, not a problem.

His issues in Detroit were a bit overblown, though. He was overweight for a season, improved his diet to fix it, but went overboard and came in underweight his final season there. I don't think that he's the best use of cap space, but I'm not worried about him turning into Olin Kreutz and totally not giving a shite about his body.

Also, now that I think about it, I think Payton said something about moving Onyemata to DE down the road. It would make me feel better about this move if we do.

He did say he envisioned Onyemata in the Cam role in the future.

He can also be a DE in big pacakages. And rotate in the middle.

Fairley should be the starter though.

He balled out cause his dream was to play for the Saints? And not that his career was on the line? Cmon man

And this is why our fan base is so frustrating. We all complain about our defense (and rightfully so). We desperately want to improve it and bring in talented players to help that process. We did just that with Fairley. NOW we are saying let him walk because he might not deliver? Well, he also COULD continue to deliver. I liked what I saw from him and the way our line came together when healthy. We should absolutely continue this.

What exactly is the direction you want us to go in?

The Nick Fairley who came into the league isn't the one we're signing. PEople grow UP, and he learned how to be a professional in st Louis and now we get to reap the benefits.

Draft better so we don't have to supplement our roster with questionable FA moves like this

It's a good signing and we drafted three quality DT's the past two years.
