My guess is they were unsure on his time frame and didn't want to put him on IR early if he could play by week 2 or 3. Guessing this is the short term IR.
If not maybe something came back late worse than expected, or he had a bad setback.

I believe this year you are allowed to place 2 on short term IR without them having to be on original 53. That was Tyson and Ford. Anybody else has to be on original 53 before than can qualify for short term IR designated to return.

I'll have to double check, but iirc a couple of years ago they did away with the 2 player limit.

It's up to 8 now.

Just saw another rule that they are allowed only 2 during the trim down to 53. Not sure if this is just for the initial day, but it would definitely explain why they waited to put him on IR if so.
I also saw an interesting tidbit that a player can actually be designated twice per season, missing a minimum of 4 games each time.

Just saw Triplett confirm it is short term IR so he can return. So looking at the rules and the timing, it definitely makes sense why they had to wait.
