I thought the only "bad" coaching decisions were:
1) Throw the red flaggie when that was clearly a catch.
2) The onside kick with 4 minutes left in the game

To go for it on 4th and 1 wasn't stupid or gutsy. I think it's just playing the odds. Odds are the Falcons terrible coverage D is not going to stop Brees and company many more times in OT. It was barely 4th and 1 and more like 4th and 2 inches. We had been running the ball decently to well all game... why not go for it.

The Saints D just made a great stand. Plain and simple. Why don't you give your team credit more than trying to shite on another team?\

although not ideal when you don't come up with it, i thought it was okay bc there was still a little bit of surprise element involved with 4 minutes left. But regardless, the saints were definitely on the lookout for it so maybe there really was no surprise to it. I think i talked myself out of my own defense.

More importantly, I watched the replay about 5 times and almost choked my dog the frick out.

The kicker onsided the ball straight so only he could get it. It went 7 yards and the kicker (barely 6 feet tall) tried to kill the Saints player. The kicker fell down like a tard and the Saints player recovered easily.

One of the worst onsides I've ever seen.

Don't forget about the 2nd down and 2 yards and calling 2 passing plays. And my biggest issue at the end of the game was why not bring the offense out, hard count and if they don't bite...then call a timeout and punt. Lots of dumb decisions yesterday. The Saints could have very well driven right back down the field and scored if we punted...we'll never know. But going for it right there and coming up short gave New Orleans that game. I would have rather stuck the defense out there and made the Saints drive to win it.

You also have to think it is sudden death rules. Meaning you have to decide if you think you have better odds to convert 4 and inches or stopping the Saints, one of the most dominate offenses in football history, from getting in field goal range after you punt. I would say you almost have to go for it on any 4th and reasonable. It would have been different if you had good enough field position to make the Saints drive the field after the punt, but Atlanta's field position would have likely meant the Saints would only have to move the ball about 30 yards before getting in to field goal territory.

1) The previous possession, they made us go three and out.

2) If you go for it and make it, you still have to go about 40 yards for a 47 yard FG attempt. However, if you miss it, you've already put your opponent in FG range. As you said, it's OT and sudden death, so missing it is virtually conceding the game, while making it doesn't assure you of anything other than a first down.

3) If you punt it, you put the Saints in a position to go about 40 yards to get into FG range. Remember, your defense just made them go three and out on the last possession...

Punting it was the correct decision in this situation, and Smith let the crowd think for him. I was there, and many Falcons fans were booing as the punt team came out. Then Smith called time out, and they cheered when the offense came back out.

Poor decision. Not thought out well.

Agreed. I was really hoping Smitty to acknowledge this after the game. Just come out and and say "Yep, I shite the bed on that call".

I keep seeing stats on ESPN saying that a team has 50.8 percent chance of winning if they go for it on 4th and less than a yard from their own 29 in OT. How could they possibly have that stat? I mean...how many times has that ever occurred? Even if there are 20 OT games per year..4th and 1 from your own 29 would only happen once or twice per year. Then how often has a team gone for it? This has to be the smallest sample size ever for a stat.

They averaged 4 1/2 yards per carry against us yesterday. They make that 4th and drive on to FG territory and win...nobody looks back and says it was dumb. Then, it would have been gutsy and the right call showing confidence in your team.

I would have still called it a dumb play. Should have kept the offense on the field to start with, tried a hard snap count to see if you could get the Saints to jump. If they don't, call a timeout and punt that bitch.

What made the call bad was the risk vs reward; You make a first and all you have is a 1st down at your own 30 yd line. You miss and it is ballgame. Drew was in his head big time!

I think whether it was a mistake or not, it was a decision that Mike Smith can live with.

he don't have much choice but to live with it. he fricked off any chance @ victory in that game.
