Hopefully we package these for a 5th rd contributor and call it a day

Rd 6 pick 4 (177)
Rd 7 pick 17 (231)
Rd 7 pick 30 (244)

From NFL Draft Tracker.

Agreed. WR, DL, or LB.

We have to. As someone said earlier, entirely too deep of a roster to have 3 late guys make the team

That’s probably not enough to move up to the top of the 5th.

Just saw this...

The New Orleans Saints entered this year’s draft with just 61 players under contract, so as they look to fill the 90-man roster, they’ll likely sign more undrafted free agents than in recent years.

General Manager Mickey Loomis said Thursday (April 25) he thinks the Saints could sign 17 or 18 undrafted players after the draft ends Saturday, which would be among the biggest hauls in the league.

The Saints initially signed 11 undrafted rookies in 2018 and 12 in 2017. Back in 2016, they signed 19, so their high number this year wouldn’t be unprecedented.

The Saints are scheduled to add six players in the draft, though that number could change Saturday. Assuming they make six picks, that would bring them up to just 67 players on the roster and leave 23 openings. In theory, they could use all of those slots on undrafted rookies immediately after the draft, but they might want to leave some spots open and fill them with players that impress during tryouts at rookie minicamp in May or veteran free agents ahead of the start of training camp in the summer.

Entering the draft Thursday, the Los Angeles Rams had just 59 players and were the only team with fewer guys on the roster than the Saints. Every other team had at least 64 players, and the San Francisco 49ers had the most players with 79.

We also have a deeper roster than the Pats. They wouldn't be making all those picks if thy didn't have the room.

Yeah, ok

The draft is much more of a crapshoot than that, the more people you bring in the more chances you have at landing future contributors and replenish your roster and let a few really expensive players walk

But what do they know

You can only bring 53 + 10 PS players.

We pretty much had our 53 set pre draft (minus maybe 3-5 spots at most). The other 37 guys are fighting for 10 spots.

Also don't forget FA isn't over and post June 1st they don't count against comp picks (haven't looked to see if we even qualify currently).

This is in support of what you said.

They know plenty. You're the dumbass that doesn't know shite.

We went through this last year & our picks got cut or poached.

The Pats approach and our approach are as close to opposite as you can get.

The Pats make tons of picks each year and less than half work out, especially when looking at the higher picks.

We make very few picks each year and most of the ones in rounds 1-3 workout, and every now and then we hit late. This is because we target guys for a specific purpose.

The Pats instead look for versatile players to adpat their scheme around and/or work into their scheme. The problem is many of these swiss army players wind up being good at nothing and fail.

If Belichek wasn't coaching the frick out of that team they would be shite. He sees ways to put this mash of shite together into something functional every year. Kudos to him for that, but they routinely suck at drafting by and large.

Yup which meant the picks outside of Leonard were good picks. We just didn't have the spots. Loomis said they intended to add them all to the PS. They were just too good to get there.

The Pats always do this, but I don't think their rate of success in the draft is any higher than the rest of the league.

It's actually lower (or at least was) based on a study a few years back.

They choose the take more shots route, which isn't bad when you get as many as they usually have. But their talent evaluators have been subpar at best. That's why they are lucky Belichek makes that up with his schemes and discipline.

50% of 9-10 guys is better than 60% of 4-5 guys

You really think Bill knows so much more than Sean that he takes inferior talent and wins 6 Super Bowls vs making the playoffs little better than half of the time

Not saying they never make great picks. Most teams only hit on one or two players and the rest are out of the league in a few years. The point is the Pats are no different despite making more selections in the draft.
