what are they?
Also, why would Dallas not come after him if Wade keeps being Wade? Yes, i know about Jason Garret.

If you were Payton, would rather be known as another Dallas coach, or the greatest coach to every coach the Saints?

who knows. he has Dallas ties, it's a much bigger team on the national scene, and Jerry will pay. No saying it will happen, but with Phillips on the hot seat and that stadium to fill you would think Jerry's crazy arse wants a name....not a Jason Garret.
Just wondering if there has been any word out of dallas at all as to who Jerry might target.

Hmm, let's analyze that. Go to a team where you have a medlesome owner, a qb wh can't win in December and a delusional fan base that compares every coach they have to Tom Landry. frick that. Here he has an owner that is soon to step to the side and let his little hottie grand daughter take over, an all pro qb in Brees who has already brought him to an NFCCG and one of the greatest, most loyal fan bases in the world who idolize him for being the most successful coach in Saints history.
WHY LEAVE? Money? Don't really think Payton is about the money, it about winning for him. Prestige? Already very well respected as one of the best offensive minds in the league, chance for Super Bowls? I don't have to respond to that do I?

This right here is what keeps Sean in New Orleans for quite a while

I will say the only thing that bothers me is a coaches ego. Many LOVE the challenge of taking a down trodden team (especially one with a good lineage like the Pokes) and resurrect them. Happens all the time. Course, job security is always nice and if Payton brings us to the promised land, he will pretty much be able to write his own ticket for a VERY long time in New Orleans.

When the Saints win the Super Bowl, Sean won't have to stop at another red light in New Orleans

He'll never have the control in Dallas that he has in New Orleans. When Jerry Jones wants to sign a moron like Terrell Owens, Payton will have no choice.
I know the press gives Mickey Loomis all the credit for personnel moves, but I guarantee you that every personnel move goes through Sean Payton FIRST and Payton has the final say. He won't have that in Dallas.

isn't Brees from Texas?
i kid about Brees.
I am serious about wondering why Payton will be off limits if Wade flames out like we all expect.

Payton has spent 4 years building the best team in the league and they did it in such a way that they are potentially headed to dynasty land. Why on earth would Payton want to leave now? Maybe if the wheels start falling off, but I can't see him even considering a move for 2 - 3 more years. Any move he makes now would either be lateral or a step down, regardless of any pay increase.

the NFC is also weak as hell looking forward with most of the other top teams being led by old QBs.

Because this is the NFL, not college football and you can't just leave your contract. Even still, he has a great relationship with Mickey Loomis and has every toy he wants here with the Saints. Ain't no damn reason to leave and work under Jerry Jones.

See the Jon Gruden Bucs/Raiders deal to understand how different the NFL is than college, and what it really takes to get a top drawer NFL coach out of his contract even when he wants to leave.

He signed a 5 year extension in 2008, which would put him under contract through 2013.
that's what i was looking for.
how much does he make?

His contract is through 2012. The terms have never been made public although some have reported it's about 8M/year

Terms weren't disclosed, although extension more or less guarantees a raise. There are no buyouts in NFL coaching contracts, btw.

so in addition to draft pick compensation a la Gruden exactly what would it take for a coach in the NFL to go to a different franchise without being fired or released?
Payment of remaining term by the new team?
