He used to play at Baylor. Highly touted coming out of college. Rams took him and he was a bust. They released him and he went to NYJ last season, and apparently wasn't much better there.

He is big and fast, and has the talent, but it just seems like he cant put it together.

it's like today, we gained the 2nd draft pick of the draft for free.

It's a one year deal mostly likely at the vet minimum. This is probably his last contract if he doesn't get his shite together.

he's neither LOL

He's one of the biggest draft busts in the past decade.

He went from #2 overall in 2009 to just special teams and reporting as eligible extra OT for NYJ last year. If he had skills worthy of a #2 overall 4 years ago he prolly has enough to still compete for a roster spot. Best case is if he magically finds a fit here and becomes a viable LT. Not a complete impossibility at this point.

Also is he any good?

He's been labeled as a huge bust, but I remember reading a PFF article recently saying he had a pretty decent 2012 season, when he actually played. I'm going to keep searching for it...

ETA: Found a chart on PFF

quote:

Name Pos. Years 12 Team 13 Team Rating Snaps
Jason Smith OT 4 NYJ CUT +6.4 265

For refrence
Jermon Bushrod OT 6 NO UFA +1.5 1130

Jared Gaither OT 6 SD CUT +4.6 249

Jake Long OT 5 MIA STL -0.3 745

Oh yea I'm not worried about the cap hit. I'm worried about him starting for us

But we've had luck before plugging in guys there, so we'll see.

Hopefully this will be enough competition to find a reliable starter at LT. Hopefully along these lines.

Jason Smith LT
Charles Brown RT

Marcel Jones
Bryce Harris
Zach Strief

If they like the potential of Marcel and Bryce then I think this could take Tackle of the draft list unless they get serious value.

chance to compete.

Agreed low risk high reward. Taking a shot on a former #2 overall pick see what you got don't loose much if he doesn't pan out. With Victor Butler signing and now this. It might let them go BPA which is traditionally where this franchise has had the most success (Malcolm Jenkins excluded of course)

Did we just shite the compensatory pick bed for signing Jason Smith?

agreed De La Puenta, Jed Collins seems as if this team can coach up the players everyone else gives up on. I like it.

I hope this doesn't mean we aren't shooting for another OT.

I am curious who most would want if somehow Lane Johnson and Jarvis Jones are on the board at 15.

Lane Johnson but that's like asking who you'd rather have sex with: Jessica Alba or Oprah Winfrey.

Well, he hasn't been very good.

This is a one year, vet minimum type deal. Give him a chance to compete, have a player on the team with at least some experience, as opposed to Charlie Brown and the other nobodies we have at LT and backing up RT.

Basically, its hoping we can rehabilitate his career, use him as an insurance policy so we don't have to panic in the Draft. If he doesn't make the team, no big deal, if he does, its a plus.

Lane Johnson.

This is simply a depth and insurance move so we don't need to panic in the draft. We'll still pick an OT at some point. 100% guaranteed. Probably in the first 4 rounds.
