whatever it is, it's nice to take someone else's trash and turn it into contributing players, if not treasure.
Shanle and Fujita were off the trash heap. Hargrove was on his last strike. David Thomas was nothing. Quite a few more players had nice upticks when coming to NOLA. It is one of the strengths of the Payton era to me. Players like coming to where the competition for jobs is on straight out performance. The draftees or bigger names signed get no particular preference- unless they perform. Here's hoping to another success story out of nowhere with Smith.

Unproven and oft-injured Charles Brown currently tops the depth chart at left tackle, and the Saints understandably are not sold on him as the starter. "I look at that spot (on the depth chart) like there's a magnet with no name on it," Payton said last month via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "Gray, it's just gray."

Look for the Saints to target a tackle such as Florida State's Menelik Watson early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

This makes me feel much better because our LT situation had me very concerned. We will likely still need to draft another one but at least we have a reliable body which we did not have before this signing.

reliable
Little premature to use this to describe Jason Smith, IMO.

Maybe Payton plans to use him as a TE sometimes out of a running formation.
