Saints rookie progress report after first quarter of 2019 season

C Erik McCoy: A
McCoy has checked every box you'd look for as a rookie starter at center. He's translated his impressive pass protection skills from college and rarely been fouled for penalties.
S C.J. Gardner-Johnson: B
Gardner-Johnson hasn't cracked the starting lineup, but he is making plays in subpackages and on special teams. His involvement should only increase as the season continues.
S Saquan Hampton: C
Hampton was impressive over the summer but missed a lot of time with an injury, and hasn't been activated for a game yet. We don't know what the Saints have in him.
TE Alize Mack: F
A brief stint on the practice squad ended with Mack's release. Fans hoped he'd be the next Marques Colston or Zach Strief, but his career with the Saints ended like every other seventh round pick since 2006.
LB Kaden Elliss: C
Ellis never got an opportunity to help on defense before an ACL injury ended his rookie year. But he did show encouraging athleticism on special teams, and should have a role when he returns next season.
WR Deonte Harris: A+
He's only four games into his career, but Harris is already a weapon for the Saints in a long-neglected area of the game. His 2019 single-season stats rank top-10 for the Saints since 2006.
DT Shy Tuttle: B
It didn't take long for Tuttle to work his way into the defensive line rotation. He's already climbed the depth chart to get on the field as a reserve and has shown flashes of being capable of more.
WR Lil'Jordan Humphrey: C
Humphrey earned promotion from the practice squad and got on the field against the Cowboys, but wasn't targeted on just a handful of snaps played. There's opportunity for him in the thin Saints receiving corps.
DE Carl Granderson: D
Granderson's late arrival due to a stint in Wyoming jail put him behind the curve, and the Saints had to rush him into action against Dallas after injuries hit the position. He didn't do much more than get thrown aside by Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith.
OL Ethan Greenidge: D
Greenidge has been a healthy inactive on gameday for the Saints so far, and rarely practiced in training camp while managing an undisclosed injury. But he's remained on the 53-man roster, so he must have some ability.
WR Emmanuel Butler: C
The training camp hype beast has started the regular season on the practice squad, and he's still there while the wide receiver corps fails to impress in games. Hopefully he shows enough to get a shot soon.
OL Derrick Kelly: C
Kelly's season started on the practice squad. Hopefully he's developing his craft in hopes of getting called up soon, because the Saints' depth along the line is razor-thin.
OL John Leglue: C
Leglue was picked up after roster cuts, having spent his summer with the Denver Broncos, and has probably been studying to get up to speed since joining the Saints. They could use a versatile backup like him if he shows he can play well in practice.

In other news, 7th round picks rarely turn into pro bowlers. Shocker.
The guy was a seventh round pick. He should have had zero expectations.

Harris by himself makes the draft class awesome. We turned a 10 year weakness into a strength with one player that we didn't even draft.

Yep. He's a complete difference maker that we got for free. Sometimes you strike gold at no cost...like we did with Deonte Harris & Will Lutz.

You’re did this just to get me to comment, didn’t you?
I’d give him a C+/B- at most.
- His first game he was responsible for -40 yards in lost yardage due to fielding kicks/punts and penalties. And his punt/kick return yards were abysmal. His kick return yards were 18 yards per return. You get the ball at the 25 if you don’t return it! (F)
- His second game he had one reception for -7 yards, but he did have 3 punt returns for 33 yards. Better, but still not good. (D)
- Third game he has a huge punt return for a TD (A+), but then he also loses the ball on a fumble (F). He finally gets his kick return numbers past 25 yards per return though. Overall (B)
- This week he had a 10 yard run on an end around. 1 kick return for 29 yards and 1 punt return for 23 yards. Good game, I wouldn’t say worthy of an A, but let’s give him one anyway. (A)
So, (F) + (D) + (B) + (A) = (C)
Not sure why you want to give him an A+. He’s fast, but the production isn’t there yet. And his PFF numbers you post don’t back this up at all.

The one they had to hit on was C and McCoy has done very well as a rookie in replacing Unger which is very hard to do in the NFL.

Tuttle is an A+. udfa and contributing good snaps and beat out some good proven competition.

He and Tuttle are A+ if you account for their undraftedness.
You need to add about 4-5 contributors each rookie class if you aren’t splurging in free agency. McCoy, Gardner-Johnson. Harris, and Tuttle. Considering we were draft pick strapped bc of the bridgewater and Davenport trades, Tuttle and Harris get huge bonuses from coming out of nowhere to round up the numbers.
Also, Harris arguably won us a whole game by himself. Against Seattle. On the road. No one knows the alternate history, but if he doesn’t return that punt who knows if we win.
And even against the Cowboys, how often have we had 23 yard punt returns the last few years? We won by 2. That punt return led to one of our field goals. We weren’t exactly moving the ball at will against Dallas.
Both plays were also early, helped teddy and the team settle in with a lead/good field position. He’s an A for me for sure

Also, I heard Bobby Hebert on the postgame show (so take if FWIW) that Harris has issues fielding the end over end punts and ST coaches have “figured him out”. Whatever is going on, he’s got to get better on special teams. I hope CSP brings Grayson back to try him out as a returner. He did just as well in the preseason IMO. Maybe it lights a fire under Harris.

- Against Jacksonville Harris returned 2 punts for 12 yards. He also had one kick return for 21 yards. We would have gotten the ball on the 25 if he just let it go out the end zone. He also called for a fair catch, then didn’t catch the ball, even though no one was close to him, and didn’t field the punt and let it bounce for lost yardage. (F)
So, (F) + (D) + (B) + (A) + (F-) + (F) = (F)
