The 65 million figure is also with the current salary cap- it is expected to rise another 10~ or more million next year so realistically we are looking at 75-80 million next year.

We have to assume at least 20-30 will be Brees and 12-16 will be Armstead.

Still leaves us with 40M+

This is why them doing things like what they did with Fairley, Jordan, Morstead, Ingram etc is fine. We have plenty of room.

There are still a few tards and trolltards who refuse to see the current price of QB's
Not another Brock out there either. Next one available would be Jimmy Garoppolo in 2018. It's either Drew at market price, GG18 or a rookie.

Saints could and probably will even if he struggles, but should they? 30m today's a 38-40 year old QB is new territory. Could they work out a deal where he gets paid less but has incentives? Or something in the front office when he retires

Brees, Unger and Armstead will take a large portion of that.

Let's hope it's closer to half of the free cap after any cuts... $20mm/10mm/5mm?

I honestly think you could get him at 25 a year this offseason...next offseason 30 becomes a real possibility. 5+ million over 4 years is a lot of wasted coin for playing wait and see.

Right now the highest QBs(Flacco and AR) make 22 million ballpark.

Trade drew for Mo Wilkerson and a 1st and Armstead for a 1st. Won't have to worry about losing all that cap space next year.

Armstead is one of the best tackles in the league.

One thing to consider with resigning next year versus extending this year is the 2017 cap hit could be larger if we extend him (don't know the details, but normally the way the contract's are structured they kick the cap can down the life of the deal).

It basically comes down to this: Is the value created by either option more important to have this year or the 2017 free agency season?

While you have a good range on Brees and Armstead's per year numbers you can bet like clockwork that they will be backloaded.

Together they will likely take up around $30 mil of the cap.

Edit:
Also $65 mil isn't with the current cap. That's a projected $11 mil bump from this year ($166 mil cap compared to this year's $155).

The cap may jump higher than $11 mil but not $10 mil more over that. $15 mil is about the ceiling on the jump.

That's currently. Before we give new deals to guys like Brees, Armstead, Unger. Which right there probably eats up about 40-45 mil. But that said were in excellent shape and should have a ton of spending flexibility.

I would hope they're front loaded with how much space we have next year.

I think Vaccaro is up for a new deal as well (and the $65 million is with an estimated increase to the cap next year already). After those 4 are re-signed, it will be closer to $25-$28 million left with only about 39 or 40 players signed.

Did the Saints not pick up Vaccaro's 5th year option?

We went over this in the other thread.

Currently we have 38 players signed next year. You add in the 6 draft picks, 5 UDFAs, Brees, Armstead, Unger, Vaccaro, and Ellerbe (if all five are resigned) and that makes 53.

With our normal backloading Brees ($20m), Armstead ($6m), Unger ($5m), Vaccaro $4m), and Ellerbe ($3m) may take up about $35-45 mil (numbers in parenthesis represent my best guess at their cap hit next year if resigned, not their per year avg.; my estimates would put it at $38m total).

The draft picks will take up about $6 mil. The 5 UDFAs will take up about $3 mil.

So we'll have a full roster with between $10-20 mil in space and that's before any cuts or restructures.

That's $30-40 mil more in space than we had heading into 2013 (iirc the year correctly). And we still managed to sign FAs that year (despite starting $20 mil over the cap).

Anyone who thinks we are in trouble next year doesn't know Loomis and the cap.

Front loading is rarely the smart play. Doing that gives them a higher per year average in the early years and thus more money on average then if you had backloaded.

Most players never see the last year or two of a big contract. That's why per year is so misleading in the nfl. It's all about the guaranteed money.

Then we have the 2017 draft class and udfa's to add to that before the season starts. 2017 is looking very good.

Breaux is also eligible for a new contract after this next season. I think the safe bet is that they let him ride out the last year of his current deal, but it wouldn't surprise me if they rewarded him with a new contract a year early.

Since the team will have the space to offer him a new deal early I would think the wise move would be to do so, instead of taking the risk of losing him in FA (although he is restricted).
