The New Orleans Saints began their rookie minicamp on Friday, and of the 74 players on the field, 48 are participating on a tryout basis.
After signing five draft picks and adding 17 undrafted rookies, the Saints have 82 players under contract, so they could sign some of the tryout players to fill the eight remaining slots on the 90-man roster.
Among the players trying out are NFL veterans like fullback Michael Burton, defensive tackle Sylvester Williams and offensive lineman Sam Young. There are also two players from LSU, safety Ed Paris and kicker Cole Tracy, two from McNeese State, punter Alex Kjellsten and quarterback James Tabary, and one from Southeastern Louisiana, defensive back Max Lyons.
There are also some players from last year’s Saints practice squad who are signed to the roster and still participating in the practices, including quarterback J.T. Barrett IV, defensive tackle Tomasi Laulile and offensive tackle Nate Wozniak.

Not a great DB, but a hell of a kick returner.

Paris was a strong leader and solid contributor; would love to see him catch on in Nola.

He's played a lot of snaps for New England at DE/OLB/EDGE. If he can put it all together there's a chance he could make the final roster at DE.

Honestly I think he is good enough to make a roster somewhere as a backup.

The other option is to have Morstead and Lutz participate at rookie camp, which may not even be allowed.
Why risk your players at rookie camp when you just need someone competent to run special teams drills?

The Saints have already waived 3 players after the 1st day of rookie minicamp.
RB Martez Carter
TE Jake Powell
LB Chase Hansen
We should be signing some new guys from the minicamp soon. We have 82 total players under contract right now, so we have 8 roster spots available.

Herniated Disk has to be the reason Chase Hansen was released so soon ...before all of the injuries he was one of the Top Safeties in CFB.

Anyone have any idea whether the team covers the travel costs for these guys to come in and try out, or do they just get an invitation and it's up to them to get there for it?

Craig Loston was also a top 3 S coming out of HS.

I would guess that the team pays the travel cost, but I'm not positive.
