this is awesome. this team will have a championship calibur defense for a few years (injuries not withstanding)
Now im a little concerned about the offense. We need a center BAD. a push up the middle absolutely destroys this offense. Its arguably the most important position on the line, and probably our weakest. (serviceable wont cut it here) Not a good combo.
2nd is a WR playmaker who can consistently get separation.
If we can address those two positions, i think we'll be set for a big run.

It may be a reach for round 2 to get a center, but I really like Tyler Swanson. If not, Weston Richburg in round 3. Those are the guys I think that could potentially make an immediate impact.

Holy shite, according to Rapoport the Broncos, who signed Ward, Talib and Ware, were also trying to get in on Byrd. And people are questioning our salary cap

haha so much for being cash strapped. This move moves us closer to the top in the NFC. High expectations for this defense. Hope they can live up to the hype

Wow, only a 3.5 mil cap hit this year. Releasing Sproles basically pays for that.
@corryjoel: Jairus Byrd's 6-year, $54M deal has $26.3M in guarantees. His 2014 cap number is $3.5M. He gets $27.9M in the first three years.

Last season, Jairus Byrd, Kenny Vaccaro, and Rafael Bush combined for 8 missed tackles.
...Malcolm Jenkins had 16 missed tackles.
Vaccaro and Byrd ranked #2 and #19, respectively, in tackle efficiency last season...Byrd ranked #1 in 2012 (among safeties).
...Keenan Lewis ranked #1 in tackle efficiency last season (among cornerbacks).
Byrd, Vaccaro, and Lewis could all be under contract for the next four seasons making an average salary of ~16M.

Keep in mind the $27.9m includes the $11m signing bonus. Taking out years 4 and 5 of that and he'll count $23.5m total for years 1-3.
Being that this year is for $3.5m, that means he'll average $10m the next two years. So this isn't a heavily back loaded contract throughout, though I suspect there may be heavy back loading after year 3.

Yeah it really isn't nearly as "bad" of a deal as I thought it was when I was like holy frick almost 10 mil a year.
Loomis doing work like usual.
Really wish we could get some other news. Been slow AF today

Yeah I would have preferred to push more money back so it would really be a 4 year deal for like $7m per and then a chance to extend if both sides were happy.
But more money up front was likely a big sticking point, especially since the signing bonus was relatively low.
And yeah I would really like to know what's up with Strief, if we are after any corners or not(starting to think not), and just anything else in general.
I realize the first big wave is over though and now the second wave will play out over about a week or two and then the bargain shopping begins.

PFF's take on the signing:
...impressive
quote:
Probably the only elite, blue chip player available in free agency this season, Byrd is one of those rare and coveted free safeties with the range, discipline and instincts to play as a Cover-1 safety. In the last two seasons Byrd has only earned a negative coverage grade in seven times and the lowest of those was a -1.0 grade against the Texans in Week 9 last season. His last “red” coverage (of only four in his career) came back in 2011. The only thing holding this deal back from a higher grade is the sheer dollar value.
...impressive

I'm a little late to the party, but still in total awe. I don't think I'll be able to wrap my mind around the thought of one of the best safeties and likely one of the best safety tandems in the league until I see it in action.
