$7m a year = good CB money. I wouldn't give that to any SS other than Polamalu.

For all the new Saints fans that are bitching about Romans deal, look at it this way. If not for the rookie scale, this money would be spent on them, we would have lost Roman as well as others that resigned (like Lance), and ya'll would be bitching about Prioleau being our starting saftey back there and Devery being the number 2 (only certain people get this). So deal with it. Yeah it's high, but that money was spent on rookies for sure at the cost of some key vets on this team. Lighten up.

very true...i think it evens out more than people think

Just because you're spending less money on rookies doesn't mean it's smart to overpay strong safeties.

waaaaay more. teams were able to retain players that they prolly would have lost at the cost of some jamarcus russells or ryan leafs type "potential".

I specifically remember the seattle TD where the TE carlson pretends to fall down at the 10 yd line and Harper leaves him to follow the qb on the rollout.
Then the ball is floated to the left side with carlson wide open int he endzone and harper shaking his head.....
I vaguely remember Harper picking up a fumble near the Saints endzone and could have had a 99 yard touchdown return. Instead he was chased down by Sam Bradford. Luckily the game was a blowout, but it made a lasting impression.
He feels a need, just seems like a lot of $$$$$$$

this wasn't a strong point of what I was conveying, glad you were paying attention. i wasn't justifying Romans deal, I said it was a bit high, but you are overlooking my point. that's cool. pick out what you want to out of it.

Were there really many other options? Outside of pure talent, he knows the system and is a veteran leader.

But your theory affects teams picking in the top 10 significantly more than the Saints. Players in the 15-32 range have always been relatively cheap.
Dez Bryant (2010 #24 pick) = 5yr/$11.5m
Jared Odrick (2010 #28 pick) = 5 yr/$13m
If we decide to keep either Jordan or Ingram a 5th year, IIRC it averages to the top 15 paid players at their position, so they'll actually probably cost MORE over that period than last year's picks.

none really. if there were, i want them explained right here in intricate detail with money, stat comparisons, leadership/veteran skill sets, etc.
c'mon, still waiting.......

Pretty embarrassing for a safety to be run down by a qb. And when I say run down I mean Bradford made up 15+ yards.

Holy frick, are you really bitching about that meaningless play?

I understand that, but what is the 24th and 28th pick contract this year worth as compared to 2010? I haven't seen any numbers. Looked at some in the high 20's and low 20's but no figures, just years on the deal.

Sensabaugh is a solid player and won't cost $7m+ a year.

He was tired from dogging your mom all night before the game Sunday. Cut him some slack.

I agree that we overpaid a little. It may cost us another veteran player, perhaps Goodwin. Tennant was considered the best center of last year's draft though so if this signing costs us Goodwin, as long as we extend Carl Nicks' deal, I will be very pleased.

Doesn't even matter. They were making ~$2.5m a year. That's chump change for a player that you draft who will likely be a 5 year starter.

The money is definitely a pain to me. I would have liked the more well rounded Mikell who went for a tad less though a coupla yrs older. The situation played out that there were no other SS options left to my liking. So he gets the deal. The great thing is NFL contracts are not guaranteed. (We'll see the details on RH). I've expressed several times being big on the potential of McDaniel. In two years he could make Harper quite expendable.
An unbiased opinion from rotoworld-
Unwilling to give New Orleans a hometown discount, Harper lands $16 million in guarantees. A premier in-the-box safety, Harper, tallied 98 tackles, three sacks, an interception, and a career-high six forced fumbles last season. We're willing to give him a pass for his brutal performance in the playoff loss to the Seahawks because he was forced into coverage too often with Malcolm Jenkins sidelined. The Saints will return one of the best safety tandems in the NFL.
----
Put that way it sounds a lot better. We're loaded with good young corners & top safeties. Vilma is a top d leader. We've got some fresh blood in the rest of the front seven. This D has come a long ways from the hope & prayer days of Bullocks, David, Simoneau, Craft, etc. Another Lombardi and we'll forget all about the bucks.
