Reports: Dennis Allen is pushing Saints to pursue Deshaun Watson

More details are emerging on the New Orleans Saints’ pursuit of Deshaun Watson, and it’s becoming clear where the drive to go get the controversial Houston Texans quarterback. Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan reports that first-year head coach Dennis Allen is putting the most pressure on this Watson chase in New Orleans, writing: “It’s notable that this is a move Payton would not have made. He was not a big Watson fan. So this isn’t just Allen’s first major venture, it’s his true foray outside the Payton Way.”That’s a sentiment shared by the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, who said: “Until Sean Payton retired and was replaced by defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the Saints hadn’t shown interest in Watson, but that’s changed. They need a quarterback desperately unless they choose to re-sign Jameis Winston.”
This isn’t too surprising. Any new coach’s odds of keeping the job are tied to their handpicked quarterback, and clearly Allen wasn’t sold on Winston to such a degree that he isn’t willing to gut the next three Saints draft classes in a bold move for Watson. That makes sense from a pure talent standpoint. When he was at his best, Watson was maybe the best passer in the league not named Patrick Mahomes. If that’s all you care about, and football teams like the Saints are in the business of winning football games, it’s the direction you take this quarterback search. Obviously Allen feels Watson gives him the best chance to win games and hold onto his job.
We can’t focus our attention just on what Watson’s done on the field, though. That isn’t the whole story and omitting the 22 allegations of sexual misconduct against him is irresponsible. Watson is actively scheduling meetings with teams like the Saints, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns so as to not conflict with his civil deposition on Tuesday in which he will finally address the claims made against him, having chosen to exercise his Fifth Amendment rights to avoid doing so in criminal court on March 11. As media covering the team and the players it is connected to, we have a responsibility to keep this situation at the forefront.

Allen has seen first hand what Watson can do against his own defense. Watson wills his team into every game. Even if the WR corps remains shitty we would contend with Watson at QB and a good Allen defense.

Allen knows as HC you're only as good as your QB.

And as a defense oriented coach he doesn't want to lean on an assistant to groom the QB because they will be gone the next year if they do a good job

So…shouldn’t the sex allegations pending be baked into the trade compensation for him? We probably could’ve gotten him for 2 firsts last season.

with the possibility, at the time, of him going to jail?

I mean he is trying to do whatever helps him succeed in the short term. If he struggles even one year, people will realize he’s not head coaching material.
Whether it is a great long-term move is irrelevant to Allen.

I guess at this point it's irrelevant. Apparently now the market dictates throwing the whole roster and draft picks at him.

Let’s sign him.
We are immediately a SuperBowl contender with him

I think we would be up there as one of the top NFC teams but you have Rams, Bucs, Green Bay.... Saints would have to prove that they can score points every game before being talked about as a SB contender.
As it stands right now all teams have to do is shut down Kamara because there is no receiving threat at TE or WR. If Thomas can return to previous form and if they can find a decent TE then that should open up a lot for the Saints offense with Callaway emerging as a good #2

If the Saints get Watson do you think Peyton is second guessing his choice to retire? Do you think the Saints would have a better chance of getting Watson if Peyton was still coach?

Part of me feels that payton will come back next year if Allen fails to make the playoffs and we have Watson.

Assuming the report that Payton didn't want anything to do with Watson is true, then it makes him far less likely to ever return to the saints while he is here

Saints with Watson, MT, Calloway, Harris and possibly Landry or any Draft/FA WR can beat GB, Tampa, and LAR.
