Ouch. It was a rough year for the New Orleans Saints offensive line, but were things really this bad? Pro Football Focus ranked the Saints’ big men up front at No. 24 out of 32 as a unit, with PFF analyst Sam Monson writing:

Rookie Trevor Penning got his first start at left tackle in the final game of his rookie year; now he needs to step in and be an upgrade over the solid James Hurst in his second season.

The Saints will be another line operating with a very different quarterback situation as Derek Carr comes in to offer his influence under center.

Best Player: Ryan Ramczyk
It wasn’t his best season, but Ryan Ramczyk was still the class of this line in 2022. He allowed three sacks and 20 total pressures over the year and was by far the team’s best run blocker.

This year’s configuration should look much like the 2022 offensive line: Penning at left tackle, Andrus Peat at left guard, Erik McCoy at center, and Ruiz at right guard with Ramczyk anchoring the right tackle spot. The Saints probably aren’t going to be able to find anyone in free agency right now who can unseat one of those starters — former Denver Broncos guard Dalton Risner will have easier paths to a starting job available to him.
It’s a bit of a cop out, but the group just needs to play better. Penning needs to be available and meet expectations as a former first-round draft pick. Peat can’t be making mental mistakes for someone of his experience and letting rushers get by him. That goes for McCoy, too, whose five penalties last year led the starters. Ruiz made real progress in 2022 and he needs to keep pushing forward. The Saints have invested too many draft picks and too much money in their offensive line for the unit to be a weakness.

I certainly don't think we got our money's worth last year but if Penning is healed and continues to improve I think the rest will take care of itself. If they play up to their expectations I believe we're ok.

McCoy is going to have a pro bowl type year now that he has the burden of making all the protection calls off of him. Carr will now do that just like Drew did. Ruiz really made a huge leap and I think he will be very solid. Ramczyk is always solid as a rock I just wonder how much longer his degenerative knee will hold up. Hopefully Penning grabs the LT job from Hurst to start the year. That would mean a lot to the entire OL because he’s that nasty player who plays past the whistle that you want on your OL. Peat is Peat. He makes great plays and terrible plays and gets hurt all the time. Penning taking the LT spot would mean Hurst can replace Peat if need be as LG is Hurst’s natural and best position.

Yes getting Penning healthy and ready to start helps everything else fall into place on the line. If Peat plays like he did last year Nick Saldiveri could unseat him.

Doesn’t matter.

We’re going to get career years from Derek Carr and Michael Thomas, the latter of which will be healthy all year. Shaheed is going to be the best WR3 in the league. Kelce-type season for Juwan incoming. Kendre Miller will be OROY. Kamara still good for 1k all purpose despite missing time. Olave 100/1200/10. Offense will average 28 points a game at minimum.

There you go again. No opinion or anything to contribute pertaining to the article. On occasion people have opposing views or opinions but those that always have opposing views typically underestimate everyone else and overestimate themselves or are desperately craving attention or both.

Sam Morrison lives in Ireland, and the guy has not touched a football field in his life. I take nothing PFF puts out with any creditability, as they’ve proven they don’t hire pro/college scouts to grade the games.

And what I said is pertaining to the article. Despite the fact that we are projected to have a bad OL, we're going to get career years out of all of our players per people on this very forum. Everything I posted has been said here at one time or another in some form or fashion.

Perhaps you are starting to look at yourself in the mirror. You know what they say about people that can't laugh at themselves, right?

The Saints will have a top 10 OL. PFF doesn’t do what they’re talking about.

Yep, still nothing to contribute. The only thing you do is wait for an opinion and then go the opposite way. Why don't you start posting some selfies.

McCoy, Ruiz and Ramczyk will be fine. Especially with better QB play.

Peat is bad. Somebody needs to take over the LG spot. We will have to see how Penning looks. I thought he looked slow last year, but hopefully he ends up stepping up and playing well. That left side will need to get better. I think it will help Penning if we transition to a running game with Kamara, Williams and Miller.

I am contributing. I’m recycling what posters on here really believe and shining light on the delusion prevalent here. Saying I’m not contributing anything doesn’t take away from your own delusion.

It's all about coaching...and who is the only guy they fired? Just the best Oline coach they ever had, and if you doubt, ask any of the players.

quote:

Saints tight end Juwan Johnson was effusive. “Dan is someone whose help changed the trajectory of my career,” he said. “He genuinely cares for the development of his players, both on the field and as men. He isn't one of the best coaches I've played for, he is the best."

And tight ends wasn't his forte'...oline was.

quote:

Dan Roushar is always open to hearing new ideas.

He seeks them out, doesn’t care where they come from and is willing to scrap something if someone has a better way. The Saints offensive line coach brought in the legendary NFL assistant Alex Gibbs, the so-called godfather of the zone blocking scheme, this offseason, and continues to have an open ear to his players.

“I don’t think I need to explain to see how good he’s been,” right tackle Zach Strief said. “He’s one of those coaches that’s able to coach and let us play. During the week, if there’s something in that we don’t like the that we’re doing it, he’s OK with us saying, hey, let’s try this.

“There’s not a lot of coaches in the league that will let that happen. He lets us be veterans. That’s important.”

I don't subscribe to PFF, but I'll say it again.

The O-line has not stayed healthy the last 2 seasons. That is what needs to happen to help the offense play better than they have the last few years.

I mean think about how many games our best linemen have had a chance to play together recently. I'd argue that play calling was stagnant because the Saints were trying to simplify the playbook because of the makeshift O-line.

Maybe it wasn't but to me I think that has something to do with it.

I mean think about it, how much can you install in practice on a short notice during the week when contact is monitored in practice.

For example, last year when we took on the Steelers, that was a rough game to watch, Offense couldn't do shite because you had patchwork group playing mostly.

Is Peat playing?

If so, then I can't disagree.

well, that magazine isn't far from the truth, Peat and Ruiz continue to be the weak links in that OLine, but Ruiz is improving. I don't know how Andrus Peat managed to get the kind of contract that he got out of the Saints because his play hasn't warranted it, but good for him I guess.

Peat got the 2nd overpaid contract because the brass didn’t want to admit they overdrafted him in the 1st.

It appears Ruiz and Penning were overdrafted as well, and you just can’t go 1 for 4 (Ram solid but injuries have him on the decline) on 1st round OL picks and have anything but an OL ranked in the mid 20s or worse.

It appears Penning just got started. Ruiz I think had his best year so far. He has played better each year. What his Ceiling is I don't know. Peat plays All Pro then plays All arse.

Be a healthy oline with Jari showing the way and we can compete.
