I have 35 Locks right now.

QB(3) - Brees, Winston, Taysom Hill
RB(2) - Kamara, Murray
FB(1) - Michael Burton...I'm assuming he wins the job over Ricky Ortiz
WR(3) - Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Deonte Harris...Tre'Quan is almost a lock
TE(3) - Cook, Josh Hill, Trautman
OL(5) - Armstead, Peat, Cesar Ruiz, McCoy, Ramczyk...Easton isn't a lock imo b/c his cap # is 5.843 mil

ST(3) - Lutz, Morstead, Zach Wood...I'm assuming Morstead wins the job over Blake Gillikin

DT(3) - Rankins, Malcom Brown, Onyemata
DE(2) - Jordan, Davenport...Hendrickson is almost a lock
LB(2) - Demario Davis, Zach Baun...Baun would have to be a complete flop not to be a lock
CB(4) - Lattimore, Janoris Jenkins, PJ Williams, Hardee (ST LOCK)
S(4) - Marcus Williams, Malcolm Jenkins, CGJ, JT Gray (ST LOCK)

Here are the 18 players that I'm guessing will fill out the 53 man roster...well 19 players if you count James Hurst

#3, #4 RB - I included Tommy Stevens here, b/c he has a chance to make the team as a utility player
5 Options - Ty Montgomery, Dwayne Washington, Tony Jones, Taquan Mizzell, Tommy Stevens

#3, #4, maybe #6 WR - I have Deonte Harris as the default #5 WR
10 Options - Tre'Quan Smith, Bennie Fowler, Lil'Jordan Humphrey, Emmanuel Butler, Krishawn Hogan, Austin Carr, Tommylee Lewis, Marquez Callaway, Juwan Johnson, Maurice Harris

#6, #7, #8, #9, maybe #10 OL - We keep 8, 9, or 10 OL. I'm including Hurst, but he won't be on the opening roster
11 Options - Nick Easton, James Hurst, Patrick Omameh, Cameron Tom, Will Clapp, Ethan Greenidge, Derrick Kelly, Calvin Throckmorton, Darrin Paulo, Adrian Magee, Jordan Steckler

#4, #5 DT
5 Options - Shy Tuttle, Mario Edwards, Taylor Stallworth, Malcolm Roach, Jalen Dalton

#3, #4 DE
4 Options - Trey Hendrickson, Margus Hunt, Carl Granderson, Gus Cumberland

#2, #3, #5, #6 LB - Kiko & Anzalone aren't a lock due to their recent injuries. Bradham isn't a lock due to his age.
9 Options - Kiko Alonso, Alex Anzalone, Nigel Bradham, Craig Robertson, Anthony Chickillo, Kaden Elliss, Chase Hansen, Joe Bachie, Andrew Dowell

#4, maybe #6 CB - Hardee is the default #5 CB
5 Options - Patrick Robinson, Deatrick Nichols, Johnson Bademosi, Tino Ellis, Keith Washington

#4 Safety - JT Gray is the default #5 Safety
3 Options - DJ Swearinger, Saquan Hampton, Chris Johnson

I was hoping to get some different opinions. If you disagree with my picks, then tell me why.

I actually like it when people convince me that I'm wrong.

No arguments on any choices except for #4CB with Nichols over Robinson. Wouldn't Robinson be a good experienced backup slot corner?

Yea, but we already have PJ for backup slot CB. The problem is that we don't really have any decent options for backup outside CB.

I think a vet that gets cut after camp may be the way we go.

I wouldn’t consider Tre’Quan an almost lock. It is year 3. Could very well cut bait.

I think Anzalone is a lock for this year. Anzalone is very good when he is on the field and makes our defense better. He can stop the run, cover, and rush the passer. His only down side is he can’t stay healthy but he will play and start for as long as he is healthy. If he doesn’t stay healthy This year I don’t think we resign him going forward though.

I wouldn’t consider JT Gray and Hardee a lock. Special teams is important but there Is always potential for someone to show them up in that department. They don’t offer anything at db. I think one of them makes it for sure but not convinced they both will.

I think Stevens will make the team if he can Prove that he can contribute On special teams. I don’t think we can sneak him on the practice squad. More teams are looking for there own Taysom Hill. You can kind of count Taysum against a receiver spot. He is pretty much our wr3 anyway.

I think Granderson and Dwayne Washington have a very good chance at making the team. We are slim at defensive end and Granderson showed promise last year. Dwayne Washington is a good special teams player. That is why he got the job over Ozigbo last year.

I think Shy Tuttle is really close to a lock. He had a really good year and they like him a lot. We usually carry a lot of depth at defensive tackle bc you want to keep those guys fresh.

Nick Easton is probably a near lock with Warford gone. Easton is our only competent back up interior offensive lineman unless someone else emerges or signs.

Easton with a restructure. I think the staff is high on Saquan Hampton could replace Gray if it is tight.

Veteran continuity will be a big advantage for the Saints.

Trequan is a lock, he still has the advantage over the UDFA and brees and Payton are talking him up again
Tuttle is a lock for production vs cost
Easton is a lock with Warford gone

If Taysom plays less ST with the big contract, Gray and Hardee are locks. They just reupped Gray a few months ago for cheap. Hardee has the bigger cap number, he’d probably be the one to go, if either were to be cut. But both play nearly all ST snaps

Stevens would be more of a luxury. With the COVID stuff I’m not sure where he fits in and what he could possibly learn to contribute. Can’t see them keeping him over someone who can contribute

I think he would have to Be able to contribute on special teams. Being that they traded a 6th to go back in and take him I think they will try to keep him. I think if he goes on practice squad then he is gone. Most teams keep 3 qbs but Taysum plays other positions so that gives us an advantage. I’m not saying he is a lock but definitely wouldn’t be surprised if they find a way to keep him. But you are right with Covid it may be tougher to keep him on the roster. And I get it a 6th is nothing but they traded back in for a reason.

I don’t think Taysum’s role will change too much this year with Brees and Jameis. Hill’s contract is only a 2 year deal. I think one of gray or hardee will make the team this year. I just don’t think both are locks. They may very well both make it though. Will depend on how other players perform. I know they do emphasize special teams in their depth.

I don’t believe Tre’Quan is a lock. We have a good veteran presence in our wide receiver core. MT, Sanders, and Harris are locks. Taysum is probably your wr3 even though he doesn’t play receiver full time. He really came on as a receiver at the end of last year.

We brought in Ty Montgomery that came into the league as a receiver. He could potentially be used as a receiver. I have read that he may be used in the slot. Could be BS but not too farfetched

You have Emmanuel Butler that showed promise last year. Could he make a big step forward? Probably not but you never know.

Payton really likes austin carr for some reason. I feel like he must have some dirt on him.

He also likes guys that can block like Krishawn Hogan and Humphrey. Then they just signed a veteran in Bennie Fowler.

Tre’Quan hasn’t really shown much in his time here. Not saying he won’t make the team I just think lock is a strong word for his status. Wouldn’t be the first time Payton talks someone up then cuts him. He is probably trying to build his confidence.

Smith is a lock man

You have to have real WR depth after Thomas and Sanders. I love Hill and Harris, but you cannot count on them for real WR reps if something were to happen to Sanders or Thomas. If everything goes right health wise, we will be afforded a great luxury where Smith, Hill and Harris will play roles that will drive defenses nuts, bc defenses will have to account for AK, MT, Sanders and Cook before even getting to those next set of guys

Brees just said today that Tre’Quan has a great opportunity this year. Curtis Johnson said in June he thinks he breaks out. Ronald Curry was gushing about him, calling him a special player. Said he takes well to hard coaching, he blocks, played outside and inside etc. Fans see a different thing and always have unrealistic expectations. Smith has an important role on this team

I have no idea if Trequan Smith makes the team, but if it were me making the decision, I'd send him packing.

I wouldn't consider him a lock, but if he's healthy, I fully expect Kaden Ellis to make the team and push for playing time.

Kid was looking good for a rookie LB before injury ended his season suddenly. I'm eager to see what we have there and I think the coaches are too.

Will Clapp is making this team as well. Dude is young, on a cheap contract and has actually played many games for us already. They'll keep the young, cheap depth at OG behind Peat, McCoy and Easton.

And Tre'Quan is making the team unless something crazy happens.

Just read this article last night after I posted. You are probably right. Hopefully he makes a leap forward this year.
