Ian Rapoport ?@RapSheet 31s32 seconds ago
Meanwhile: I'm told the #Colts did not speak with Sean Payton's agent before re-signing coach Chuck Pagano last night. SF or NO for Payton

San Fran makes 0 sense. That's a complete rebuilding job, when he could finish his career here with Brees and then maybe take on something like that.

That goes with what Underhill said:

Payton's reps never spoke with Indianapolis about Payton. That's a false report.

I wonder who tells Rapaport things. He never specifies, so I'm guessing it's a 5-year old kid.

If by some miracle Rapaport actually heard this from someone that knows something, Payton is staying and is using SF as leverage for an extension. Why TF would he want to go to SF?

I just laugh every time some talking head mentions how close this or that job is to one of his kids. I'm not saying it's totally irrelevant, but if he has to get on a plane anyway who cares if he's flying to LA from San Fran or NOLA. It's a day of travel regardless.

The dumbest one yet was that guy who said Brees might want to go to St Louis because it's close to Purdue.

The more information that comes out, the more I'm thinking that he stays here.

looking like it but man, just a bit awkward "oh yeah, payton is signing this extension after both parties tried to part themselves".... is mickey using this as a resource to gauge paytons true market value bc he's demanding to much and is playing hardball with him financially...?

It's always better for people that aren't top athletes to slowly roll into that backpedal.

thing is, though, Payton never said anything about leaving. A bunch of reporters speculated that he might and sports networks, with 24 hours to fill, ran with it and turned it into a story when it's entirely likely that Payton never even entertained the thought. Not sure he would need to backpedal on something he never said himself, or why it would be awkward for him and Mickey if trading him was never an option.

It might have been, but there's never been any primary source confirming it.

He won't go to SF because that is where Fletch said he will go and Payton reads all the press clippings. If I were in sports, I would find no greater joy than trolling that guy.

I think that there was some shopping going around just to gauge interest. If the 2nd round pick part was really out there, I'm thinking it was just to encourage people to talk to them. He was never going to be traded for a 2nd rounder, but if they started by saying we want two 1st rounders or something, you don't get as much dialogue with other teams. I don't think either side really wants him gone, but if someone came with a Gruden like offer, the organization would have to do it. Just an unusual situation when your coach is your biggest trade piece (besides Brees) and you know that a rebuild is on the horizon.

Just my opinion, don't even know if it really makes sense lol

I doubt Sean wants to be in proximity while his daughter gets smashed in college.

Why would go to a dumpster fire in SF?

Makes zero sense.
