Orleans Darkwa

Thoughts on him? Dude has low miles, just turned 26, had a career year last season when he finally got some carries (4.5 ypc). And is someone we could probably get for about $3.5/year. Why break the bank for a ride-off-into-the-sunset, 12 game Ingram?

so you want to spend nearly all of our ingram savings on darkwa? down grade for what reason then? i rather 12 ingram games than 16 darkwa.

I'd rather do that then hitch ourselves to an aging Ingram wagon for a multi-year deal north of $6 mil/year.
All I'm saying is, bring in someone else before kowtowing to Ingram's hold-out demands. He has no leverage in a hold-out. We already aren't' going to have him for the first 1/4 of the season.

When has Ingram ever given you the idea he might hold out for a huge contract? He's always signed team friendly deals.
I'm not against Darkwa for a 3 game fill in (skip week 1 so we don't have to pay him all year), but he's not an Ingram replacement, IMO.

Just the impression that you get. He just came off a pro-bowl season. Has one year left on a Contract in the waning years of his career. Is 28. This is the last time he'll ever have a chance to get a big contract. We didn't draft anyone that can replace him. It's a smart time to holdout. We honestly should have predicted this.

Yeah, why would he not be looking to get paid.

You really think wasting 4 mil a year for 4 games is worth it?

No. I think Darkwa should be considered as a long term option. I love Mark, but giving a 28 year old running back a multi-year expensive contract is what a bad team would do. We need young contributors on team friendly deals. We already have an all-pro running back.

FIFY.
Look, I like Darkwa and think he is a good player who I would take for 4 weeks, but absolutely no way am I okay with getting rid of Ingram for him.

Would you be willing to sign up for Ingram at something like $6 mil/year for 3 years? Is that still better than a cheaper option with upside?

I’d rather just roll with Jonathan Williams

And here comes Ingram himself to serve me some crow.
Dammit Ingram!

More info on this guy from today, PFT:
"Free agent running back Orleans Darkwa had a plate inserted in his leg after fracturing it during the 2016 season, but it won’t be there when he next takes the field.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Darkwa had surgery to remove the plate on Wednesday. Per the report, the injury has fully healed and doctors recommended removing the plate in hopes that it helps with Darkwa’s explosiveness.
Darkwa visited the Patriots early in free agency and Rapoport reports there’s been other interest in his services from teams “encouraged” by the decision to remove the plate. Darkwa’s expected to need a month to heal, which may mean any suitors wait until just before training camp to renew discussions about a contract.
Darkwa ran 171 times for 751 yards and five touchdowns for the Giants last season."

The Saints need to do what the Steelers do every year during Leveon Bell's four game suspensions: Play the backup RB.
We don't need to pay someone 3.5 million for four games and screw up the good salary cap vibes we have right now.
Just play with what you have for the first four games.
I think a lot of fans are panicking because it's the first four games so it gets magnified more. If Ingram were injured in Weeks 6-9, no one would even bring up paying someone to play or, "Oh my god we need to go out and get someone!"
