Bunch of good info/metrics here:
LINK

It notes that Butler isn't just the pass rusher everyone is making him out to be. The opponent passed the ball 57% of his plays and ran the other 43%, so he certainly has experience there.

Butler's grade against the run per PFF over his career:
2009 = -1.7
2010 = 0.3
2011 = 1.7
2012 = 6.1

Can't find any coverage metrics, but I couldn't help but notice he had 3 passes defended in ~300 snaps. Spencer (who played the same position), had 3 PD's in ~850 snaps. Ware had 0, but he's used in coverage a lot less often.

This could be a sign that they think Nhamdi is leaning towards SF because its highly unlikely they can afford both...I hope I'm wrong

If we went after Kruger like we did we must have more money for FA's than we can see. Would hope its not a either or but you never know.
If any GM could pull off getting Asom and Butler its Loomis.
Good news.

I didn't think Ryan would be THIS beneficial to have as a coordinator. Many guys seem to want to play for him. It's exciting

New Orleans Saints and pass rusher Victor Butler seem like a perfect match

quote:

The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder spent the past two years working with new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Dallas, playing in the same 3-4 scheme the Saints will now employ. He seems primed for a larger role after tallying 11 career sacks as a backup behind standouts DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer the past four years years. And he should come at a reasonable price - especially since he has lasted this long in the open market.

quote:

Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks, who now works as an analyst for NFL.com, offered a similar breakdown, saying Butler could potentially develop into a standout situational pass rusher like Paul Kruger, who broke out this past year with the Baltimore Ravens.

Brooks also suggested that no one would have a better scouting report on Butler than Ryan.

quote:

In New Orleans, he would presumably leap to the front of an outside linebacker rotation that also includes youngsters Junior Galette and Martez Wilson - though both of them also have the potential to make bigger impacts in the new 3-4 defense.

I just don't see us taking an OT in the first round. We don't like paying OT big money

agreed. we build our line from the inside out and place our premium on OGs. Id expect to see a 3rd for OT and maybe a FA or two to add depth/competition. Maybe a move up in to the 2nd, but i have trouble seeing the 1st.

Nnamdi's gone. There is no Nnamdi.

I would love to sign us some Victor though.

Not arguing but why do you say this with such confidence?

I think Butler would be a nice addition at the right price. He is a Gallette-type player that needs more playing time. I wonder how many here even knew who he was before free agency though and now everyone is excited.

not giddy like the rumors of big dollar high profile free agents. You have to pay an exorbitant premium to get the Krugers or Revis type players. We don't have that luxury. Who they go after will have some sort of question mark or factor to consider. Personally I like going after younger guys that you are betting on to break out to a level higher than what they have on their resume so far- versus hoping an old guy can have enough gas to get through another season or two. Keenan Lewis is exactly that as well.

Early on Butler clearly stood out in that fit to me. Remember before last year Anthony Spencer was considered somewhat of a disappointment. The sentiment in Dallas before 2012 was that Butler would be the starter in 2013 if Spencer didn't break out. Fortunately for us, Spencer's advancement is likely pushing him our way. I dunno that he will be a studly star. I love that RR has the intimate knowledge of who he is as a player and that he fits into the budget.

we didnt run a 3-4 then which i think makes it irrelevent. Not to mention we didnt have his former coach.

(Nnamdi)

I'm just not feeling it. He's like a hot chick with perky nipples that stops by and shows you her new lime green thong.

Then leaves and never calls you back.

And I'm OK with that.

Biotch.

Sounds like he's only assuming caused Nnamdi didn't sign before he left from his visit.

Horrible assumption though.

There's no news on whether he's leaning towards 49ers or Saints.

He may be waiting to see if there are any other suitors. Thats only good for a short period though as he risks the market drying up as he risks over playing his hand. I expect we hear something by COB Friday.
