I hear ya. I was saying "a" mario williams because of the above post. I never was a big fan of Williams. Just using him as an example. However, Haynesworth 2.0 probably still has more sacks than Saints D-Line 1.0

Would the Saints be a better team without Drew Brees and with a "Mario Williams type player"?

frick to the no.

here's a little thing I posted in a previous thread:

I keep seeing the same bullshite posted over and over about Drew's contract killing the Saints this season. We have yet to really see an impact for Drew Brees' contract.

For those blaming the loss on Nicks and Meachem on Brees:

We weren't going to pay Nicks the most money in NFL history for a guard while having the 2nd highest paid guard already on the roster (and having Grubbs in free agency). We couldn't get in a bidding war with Tampa Bay's unlimited cap space. We weren't going to pay Meachem because of his injury issues and the amount of money he was asking.

On defense:
We added Lofton and Bunkley. Those are 2 great additions on paper. We also added Hawthorne as another good addition.

We decided to part ways with Tracy Porter. We had plenty of cap room to sign him, but decided it wasn't worth it. We have $8 million in cap space for this season, and he signed for 1 year, $4 million

Future Implications:

The salary cap is set to drastically increase in 2014 with the new NFL TV deal. The $8 million we have saved this year actually rolls over into the 2013 cap. His contract reflects the new TV deal and the rollover. Aaron Rodgers will get a larger contract, and it is comparable to Peyton's who is coming off a major injury

Yall need to do some research before spouting off the same tired crap over and over again. Drew's contract should still allow us to be a contender for the remainder of his tenure with Sean Payton

Whoa, whoa whoa... you need to chill buddy, you are making to much sense and that's not allowed on this board.

Also, people need to realize that Nicks could have taken less to stay but decided to chase the big money. I just don't understand why Nicks gets a pass but Drew is taking the blame. If Nicks truly wanted to stay in New Orleans, he would have.

We could have franchised tagged Nicks.

Meachem is easily replaceable.

I didn't realize Porter signed with Denver for so little. Big frick up by the FO.

And had an enormous amount of salary tied up in your guards. Not to mention it would be likely that you wouldn't be able to sign Colston or Lofton, because we were paying Brees regardless.

I think the thinking was that he was going to get offered more. Not to mention that we have Greer, Robinson and Patrick and Porter was injured a lot so it wasn't good to have four guys getting big money for two/three spots. (not saying it's right, but just saying that it was a calculated decision.)

Again, no where did I say that Drew didn't deserve to get paid. I am simply saying that NO ONE is worth $100 million. But that is my personal opinion. I understand that's what the market dictates. I just wish he would have took less so we could build a better team.

Saints need to do a better job building their defense in the draft.

And I'm not against the Saints going to a 3-4 at all. There's a lot of game changing LB/DE hybrids when you go that route. Saints could have had Clay Matthews too.

What should we have done instead?

I'll answer your question, but it may not be the answer you want. Could have spent a majority of the money adequately on bolstering up the defense and should not have let Nicks go(I thought he escaped too easy and that pissed me off). Also, Drew has hit his peak IMO. We should be looking at a young QB protege for Brees in the upcoming draft or FA to groom for the next 3 or so years. Chase Daniel is not an NFL starter.

Except you didn't answer the question. I said BE SPECIFIC.

So what SPECIFIC players would you have gotten to "bolster" the Defense, and what would you have paid them.

2nd, who would be paying QB for the Saints this year?

It would definitely have been a pick between Nicks and Colston. They would've had to talk Colston into signing for less. Who knows if it would have happened.

Our running game is crap though, and Colston was decent yesterday, but pretty insignificant as far as the rest of the season.

I for one wouldn't mind this. Go for 3-4 and you already have Tez Wilson, that is that LB/DE tweener. Draft Mingo and then you have your two outside LB's. Smith Jordan your outside ends with Hicks in the middle.

Hell switching to 3-4 might not work but who knows. I couldn't get any worse...right?
