O-LIne is very Offensive!

Our Offensive Line is very offensive. But then again, our opponents seem to like them very much.
And yet, age isn't the problem for the O-Line, like it is for the defense. What's the solution for such a porous line?

Health. They’re playing without 2 starters. Take away a teams best lineman and another starter and you’re gonna see any oline struggle. Pretty simple. Just stay healthy.

Not so simple with Ochsner at the helm

Saldiveri is rated 59.8 on pff, which is obviously not good, but he was under 50 a few weeks ago (I think). Is he improving?

As another poster pointed out, it's a matter of health. When all 5 starters were healthy, it looked like the Saints had a top 10 o-line. Then the pieces started falling and it was obvious (although this board had been screaming it since last offseason...and before) that there was absolutely no depth. At one point they had someone that started the year on our practice squad starting at LG and the Center was on another team's practice squad a few days earlier. No team/QB/offense is going to play well with that situation and the type of pressure up the gut that usually results.

Does an NFL OL ever keep its 5 starters healthy throughout the year? You need adequate backups, which are hard to come by and the Saints drop off is precipitous.

McCoy and Fuaga are the best OL we have. They can be built around.
Ruiz has improved from his first two years and is fine at RG.
Penning has played better than we thought he would coming into the season. If he keeps up this level and cuts out the boneheaded plays, he will be fine too.
LG is a black hole at the moment and has to be addressed this offseason.
Young, Patrick and Saldiveri are okay backups. You don’t want them filling in for more than a game, but they are okay is spot duty.
Ezirim Is on the PS. You have to hope he can develop into a capable backup over a few years.
As said before, McCoy being out hurts this OL and LG needs a major upgrade.

Yep, Fuaga was a great draft pick. He has played very well for a rookie at LT. We got a good one with that pick.
McCoy is the glue that holds everything together. We need more injury free time from him. The line goes to shite when he is not able to go.

Ruiz only seems to play good when McCoy is next to him. Ruiz while improved still completely whiffs to much like he did a few times against the Rams. If McCoy stays healthy you can work with what Ruiz gives you. You would like more from the spot but you have a ok line with Ruiz at his current level of play.

I completely agree. He has made a ton of progress, he is athletic, and he moves well when run blocking. The team has seen enough positive out of him to be optimistic about his future at RT. He should be ok to play that spot moving forward. The only thing left he has to fix is his terrible punch timing when pass blocking. He is always late on his punch and winds up to much which allows the DE to get into his body. This should have been coached out of him by now but it hasn't gotten better. If he can improve on that then we have something we can work with.

LG has to be improved during the offseason, either by draft or free agent. I had high hopes but Young, Patrick, and Saldiveri are not starter quality. They can be depth pieces but the Saints need a better LG.

It also doesn’t help when you trade away mid round draft picks to move up which can be instrumental in drafting these kinds of guys to develop into quality backups/spot starters.

I think they’ve seen enough to know he’s upgradable at tackle and likely better off as a guard or your swing tackle
The good - he’s stayed healthy, run blocking will play. PFF has him graded as 30th amongst tackles
The bad - still bad at pass pro. PFF has him graded as the 93rd best tackle at PB. Hes top 10 in pressures allowed. Top 10 in penalties, which is just as bad as a sack.
Fans are content with him bc he was so terrible, any improvement is magnified 10x. We need to look to build depth with guys who aren’t PS shitheads. Upgrade penning if the opportunity presents itself. He will still have a valuable role

Wasn't Patrick the highest graded O-Lineman, the first 2 weeks, before Mcoy's injury and then him getting injured? Patrick is much more than a backup LG.

Lucas Patrick was playing at a really high level but then injuries hit him hard. He's another guy that for whatever reason, just cant stay healthy

We have 3 first rounders on our OL and a high 2 that we traded up for!
Wouldn’t we expect more out of this group

No, but not many teams go into a game down 4 starters in the oline. And rarely do they have a situation where they are in their 3rd or 4th option at 2 positions
