I don't see any way they can afford to keep Smith and Vilma. I like the idea of loyalty to your players but even with re-negotiated contracts, they're back end of the roster players in this new scheme so you're better off cutting bait and saving all the money you can.

I hope these numbers are more accurate than espn's(somewhere over $3.5 mil over is what they're saying) and that it reflects the rfa tenders and Galette signing. If so we are in good shape once we release or cut the pay of Vilma and Smith.
Definitely enough to sign a LT(be it Bushrod, Long, or someone else) and a couple of mid level bargains.

If they take pay cuts that drop them down to vet minimum it could be better to keep them. Then they could cut someone like Roman Harper instead if they had to.

Harper makes too much too, but he'd at least be a good fit for where they're going and be on the field a lot.
There isn't a spot where Vilma makes sense. He's too small and lacks the ability to shed blocks to play inside, and he is a terrible fit as a rush linebacker too. It's why the Jets moved him in the first place, years ago.
Will Smith is an aging, fat defensive end at this point..MAYBE a rotational 5 tech but I don't see it really. He could do it out of necessity but there are better (younger) options already on the team and they could draft a guy to do the same thing and make way less.
They've been big parts of the team for a long time but it's time to move on imo.

This system seems so convoluted.

I was talking specifically about what's best for the cap. If Vilma and Smith are released, they couldn't release Harper without taking a big hit. If Smith or Vilma, or both, just take huge pay cuts, it at least leaves their options open with Harper.
Posted on 3/9/13 at 6:09 pm to landrywasbeast30
You mean better to keep them cap wise or team wise? Because cap wise we will save the most by cutting them.
No matter if we cut or keep them they get their bonus, but if we keep them even at vet minimum that is added on top and will cost us more.
And I like both players and was hoping the money could add up, but both are not great scheme fits. Though I think a place could be found if we tried, it would mean using other players ineffectively to cover up their deficiencies.
Harper on the other hand is a great scheme fit for Ryan's d, and though overpriced, will be very effective.

OAK has the biggest amount of Dead Money for 2013 at a whopping $17,547,952. Coming in Second is ATL with $11,526,938. Atl is under the cap but they crippled themselves by restructuring contracts year after year. This is a reason the Saints would be wise to part with Smith and either Vilma or Harper. Smart thing to do here is keep the guy who gives you the least amount of hit and gives you the most production, which in this case is Harper.
If a player is cut before June 1st, his base salary is the only thing coming off the books. the bonuses for the current and follwing years still count against the cap for the current year. If a player is cut on or after June 1st, the only thing counting against the cap is his current year bonuses. However, teams are allowed to cut two veteran players before June 1st and designate them as June 1st cuts.
Will Smith is due to get a roster bonus at the end of Mar, so if he is cut it will come before that but most likely way before because FA starts Tuesday. If Smith is cut and designated as a June 1st cut he will count $4,391,666 towards the 2013 cap compared to $14,451,666 if kept.
John Vilma being released would count $2,632,500 towards the 2013 cap, compared to $8,632,500 if kept.
Cutting both of these players would put the Saints at $15,052,320 going into FA.

Are you sure that's a correct number?
I was under the impression that the savings, if they were cut, would be more than that.
ETA: "Smith is due $10.15 million in salary and bonuses in 2013. If he's released, the Saints still will be charged $6.8 million over the next two years to account for the remainder of Smith's pro-rated signing bonuses.
Vilma is due $6 million in salary and bonuses. If he's released, the Saints still will be charged $2.6 million against the 2013 cap in pro-rated signing bonus."
LINK
By using these numbers, Saints saves $3.4 mill on Vilma and $3.35 Mill on Smith...that's $6.75 mill.
I guess the confusion is where the cap is right now.

No my original calculations were wrong.
By cutting Smith the Saints would save $6,691,666.
By cutting Vilma the Saints would save $6,100,000.
This would free up $12,791,666.

Even that number doesn't jive with what NOLA.COM has (see the link in my earlier post).
It's not a big deal. It seems that everyone is having a tough time figuring out exactly where the Saints cap situation is right now.

Isn't there a website that has pretty up to date info on this? I think blues posted it a while back.
Time to search.

I really don't know when the league office releases cap info. With all the restructuring going on, who, other than the Saints folks, know exactly what the real numbers are.
I know we'll find out real soon.

Looks like you can take off about 12 million off the Dolphins cap pretty soon. Looks like they will be the ones to hand a big sack of money to Mike Wallace

I just found an up to date site and figured it out.
Will Smith is due $14,541,666 in 2013. If he were cut the only thing counting against the 2013 cap would be his prorated bonus of $4,391,666. That is a savings of $10,150,000.
Jonathan Vilma is due $8,632,500 in 2013. If cut, the only thing counting against the 2013 cap is his prorated bonus of $2,632,500. That is a savings of $6,000,00.
Togethe they will save the Saints $16,150,000.
Counting that towards the 1,097,680 they are currently over the cap, the Saints would have $15,052,320 going into FA.
These figures do not include the new contract for Junior Gallette.

If those numbers are right, even Stevie Wonder can see how this is going to end!
Posted on 3/9/13 at 8:23 pm to adono
Yeah that's looking mighty fine. Taking maybe $4 mil in rfa tenders(DLP and Ivory), assuming Galette is cheap in the first year($1-1.5 mil), and our draft picks(forgot how much; under $4 mil right?), that takes up about $8-$10. A free agent lt, cheap in the first year, might be $4-5 mil.
That pretty much takes up the cap. Maybe one more cheap free agent unless we do more shuffling like signing DLP long term and lowering his $2 mil figure, restructure Harper/Brees/etc., and cutting Herring.

Okay, here's the deal; Harper, Smith, and Vilma are the 3 guys making the kind of money that make them most likely to either be released, restructured, or take a pay cut.
Only 2 of those guys could be cut and be designated as June 1 cuts. The 2 most likely 2 take pay cuts would be Smith and Vilma. Not saying they will, but considering all the circumstances, they would be more likely to take pay cuts than Harper. Harper would be a restructure if anything.
So taking all things into consideration, it would be better to have at least one of Smith or Vilma take a pay cut in case they decided to cut Harper. If they cut Smith and Vilma, then find someone they like better than Harper, they would be screwed.
Whether they keep Harper or not, he shouldn't be making the kind of money he is going to make next year. If he restructures, then it makes sense to just cut Vilma and Smith.
