NFL Approves new kickoff rule

This should be fun. I just hope the Madden people can get it in the video game before release.

Net positive. Watching everyone fair catch or kick the ball out of the endzone is boring as hell.

So, we will see a lot of squib kicks? There is no incentive for the kicker to try for hang time of the players cannot move until the returner touches the ball. Might as well squib it down the field to maybe make it more difficult for the returner to pick it up?

I mean the ball would have to get through the line of covering players and the line of blockers and travel an additional 10 yards after that to enter the landing zone. Seems like a lot of traffic to have to navigate to avoid the opponent getting the ball at the 40.

Details of new proposed NFL kickoff rule:

Kickoff Spot (Kicker): 35-yard line (standard spot)
Kicking Team (10 players): 40-yard line (opponents)
Receiving Team (7+ players): 35-yard line
Setup Zone: 5-yard area between the receiving team’s 35 to 30-yard line.
Landing Zone: Between the receiving team’s goal line and its 20-yard line
Returners: 2 maximum
Kickoff Lands Short of Landing Zone: The offense starts at the 40-yard line
Kickoff Lands in the Landing Zone: The receiving team MUST return the kickoff
Kickoff hits the Landing Zone then downed in the End Zone: Touchback at the 20-yard line
Kickoff into the End Zone on the fly: Touchback to the 30-yard line
Kick Out of Back of End Zone (Air or Bounced): Touchback to the 35-yard line
No fair catch/signal is allowed
Safety Kicks: Kickoff from 20-yard line (standard rule)

Owners approved the hybrid kickoff rule on Tuesday during the Annual League Meeting, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the decision. The vote passed 29-3, NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay told reporters.

The move will dramatically alter the look and feel of the kickoff, a play that had become an afterthought as safety rules essentially wiped out incentives for a return.

The passed kickoff rule features new alignments for both the kicking and receiving units. A "landing zone," the area between the receiving team's goal line and its 20-yard line, would prompt action off the kickoff if the ball were to land in that sector.

Kickoffs will remain at the 35-yard line, but the remaining 10 players on the kicking unit will line up at the opposing team's 40-yard line. The receiving team lines up with at least seven players in the "set-up zone," a five-yard area between their own 35- and 30-yard lines, with a maximum of two returners can line up in the landing zone.

they may as well just have teams start at the 25 and not even have a kickoff under those rules
