Round 1.28

PICK: Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern

Tall, ahtletic, instinctual CB that helps to fill the team's most pressing need.

-Has only allowed 1TD in 419 coverage snaps the last two seasons.

-Durability concerns. Only 1 INT in 21 games.

-Grew up in Chicago, spent SR season at IMG Academy. Turns 21 next month.

Plan B: Jayson Oweh, DE Penn St

Despite low sack numbers, has excellent pass rush grades via PFF, to go along with an all-time great pro day. Fills hole on a depleted DL from this offseason.

Round 2.60

PICK: Baron Browing, LB, Ohio St

Your prototypical 4-3WILL. Was moved around a lot at Ohio St, but ultimately, his athleticism is what stands out to the Saints. Good in coverage. Show pass rush flashes.

-Played in 43 Games. 111TCK, 19 TFL, 2 FF, 7 Sacks.

-Former 5 Star player out of Fort Worth

-22 in Febuary.

Plan B: Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa

Developmental 6'8" 311 OT with high starter upside because of his elite athletic profile. Likely RT, but has physical traits to play LT if his development goes smoothly.

Round 3.98

PICK: Josh Palmer, WR, Tennessee

Palmer is a nice-sized WR that has been bitten by poor QB play at Tennessee. Strong hands, good route runner. Despite 'ok' run times, was able to get deep easily at Tennessee.

- 99-1514-7td 15ypc in college.

-Canadian, but played HS at football powerhouse ST Thomas Aquinas in FL

-Josh Palmer had 101 snaps vs. likely top-three round CBs: Surtain, Horn, Campbell, Stokes and Joseph.

14 of 14 in catching the “catchable balls” in those matchups (per PFF), 11 first downs, 4 TDs, and 16 YPR.

Plan B: Jay Tufele, DT, USC

Versatile 3t that can play 3 downs. Disruptive former rugby player, has show pass rush flashes. Strong at point of attack vs run. Weak DT class overall. One of the last few good ones that should be on the board here.

Round 3. 105

PICK: Rachad Wildgoose Jr., CB, Wisconsin

AGain, Saints look to add CB depth. Wildgoose was limited to only 2 games in 2020 because of injury. Played in more of a zone coverage in college, but scouts think he has some man-traits. Profiles as a slot CB, more than likely, but has experience on the outside as well. Played special teams as well.

-Started 22 games over last 3 seasons

-Prepped at powerhouse Miami Northwestern

Plan B: Cam Sample, DE, Tulane

Sample is more of a base 4-3 DE to me, though played mostly DT at Tulane. Could very much slide inside on passing downs as a pro. May be a little bit of wishful thinking that he is available here after a great Sr Bowl. Could be in play for that 98th pick too, or even sooner.

Round 4.133

PICK: Trey Sermom, RB, Ohio State

Saints RB3 still has a hole, and with Murray's contract due up soon, Sermon would be a great replacement for the thunder role.

-His 1.49 10yd spilt is the fastest of any RB in this class.

-Oklahoma transfer

-455 carries, 2946yds, 26TD, 6.5 ypc career

Plan B: Ben Mason, FB, Michigan

With Alex Armah only signed for 1yr, Payton gets his FB of the future. Immediate special teams starter. Big enough to play in-line if needed. Does not have a ton of experience in pass game, but his athletic profile shows that could come. Freak athlete for a FB.

Fairly good analysis. We would be just fine with these picks IMO.

I didn't watch Michigan play this year, but Ben Mason better be a complete monster at FB to get drafted in the 4th round.

Also, I don't hate the idea of taking 2 CB's. If our guy is there on 2 separate occasions...why the hell not?

He’s by far the most athletic FB in the draft

If you merge with with TE, he’s the 5th most athletic TE by RAS(relative athletic score)

6’2” 246
6.89 3 cone
375” vert
4.77 40

I just think without brees the offense could change. More traditional run sets.

If they keep these 5 picks, I think they will double up somewhere. Whether it’s OL/DL or CB, we shall see

I really don't want a WR at 28.

I love Terrace Marshall & his huge ceiling, but I'd still be hesitant to take him at 28. I just think we should be going after other positions that early...or even trading back if possible.

If I was being forced to choose a WR to take at 28 though...I'd probably go with Marshall.

Why do you say that, SP doesn’t have a history of taking WRs early. WRs drafted under SP
2006 - Haas (6th)
2006 - Colston (7th)
2007 - Meachem (1st)
2008 - Arrington (7th)
2012 - Toon (4th)
2013 - Stills (5th)
2014 - Cooks (1st)
2016 - Thomas (2nd)
2018 - Smith (3rd)

In 15 years, SP drafted 9 WRs, and 5 of them in the first 4 rounds

Draft strategy changes when Drew leaves

Drew made WRs

I think they are going to have to meet in the middle now & boost the raw talent of that unit. I would call it average at the current moment.

Athis, I like Collins too & almost mocked him. I think he is creeping up boards, may go between 60-98

The more I watch Greg Newsome, the more I like him. If he falls to 28 and the Saints don't take him, I will melt. With that said, I don't see him falling that low.

I’m not convinced he will be there. Might go off the board a few picks before that.

Farley is a wild card too.

If they are dead set on CB they could reach for one of the Georgia guys, or even Kelvin Joseph. Asante Samuel too

If the draft gets to pick 20 or so and Newsome is still there, I'm all for moving up to get him. I think a lot of it will depend on how teams view Farley. If they are willing to overlook the durability concerns and take him, then I think the Saints can be in play for Newsome.

I'm confused. Everything you posted sort of supports his bold take.

Obviously the avg of 1 every 3 years in the first 4 rounds would support that, but it doesn't necessarily say he will "definitely" take a WR in the first 4 rounds. I also don't think it s a bad take, just don't understand the definitely part.

Also, if following recent trends, I guess we were due for a WR in the 4th round last year
