Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger knew he had no future with the Titans. He now thinks he may have one with the Chargers.

“It was tough to be in Tennessee behind a guy like Marcus [Mariota], where there isn’t a light at the end of the tunnel,” Mettenberger recently told his new team’s official website. “Being here has put the wind back in my sails.”

It’s a sensible position, given that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is far closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Still, if all goes as planned, Mettenberger won’t be playing much during the final two years of a rookie contract claimed on waivers after the Titans parted ways with the 2014 sixth-rounder.

“I’m a tough, hard-nosed guy,” Mettenberger said. “I am going to try and do whatever I need to do to make this team better, whatever role that is. Whether that means being the backup or the third-string guy, I’ll do whatever they need me to do.”

One thing they’ll need him to do is play in Nashville when the Chargers face the Titans in the preseason.

“It will be a fun experience to head back there, stand on the opposing bench and get to play with it being an early preseason game,” Mettenberger said. “But I haven’t really thought about it much. I’m focused on getting [acclimated] here. It’s easier picking it back up having been around [offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt] before. I haven’t hit any walls with the playbook yet. Right now I’m just competing, trying to keep up with Philip, stay in his back pocket and learn as much as possible.”

One thing everyone learned recently is that demand for quarterbacks continues to outpace supply, given that the Bengals and Giants also tried to claim Mettenberger on waivers. At some point, he’ll get a chance to compete for a starting job, simply because there aren’t enough high-quality quarterbacks to go around.

The Bengals and Giants put in a waiver claim. The Saints should have put in a claim, too. He may have been worth a conditional 7th round pick.

No, they should not have.

And even if they did, San Diego (which means "whales vagina" btw) still would have gotten him.

Let's face it, Payton wouldn't touch a LSU with one of Tom Benson's 10 foot long candy poles.

Need I remind everyone about La'el Collins?

Your using hindsight for your logic. You, or the Saints don't know the Chargers put in a claim for him at the time he was available. I am questioning why no claim was made, or why a conditonal 7th round pick was not offered for him. The Bengals and Giants thought he was good enough to put a claim in.

I'm not. It seems the FO and CSP did not want him and do not believe his services as a QB are beneficial to the teams future success

Maybe the Saints don't like Mettenberger's skill set. Maybe they don't think he has what it takes to be a successful NFL QB. Maybe they like thier group of QBs they hand picked to be here. Maybe they want to save thier waver position for a guard that some team picks. Maybe they know it would be a wasted pick up considering they already have 3 QBs on the roster. Maybe you and other posters don't know better than an NFL coach.

Paddy has an irrational hate for LSU that he developed mainly to annoy me. I just ignore it now.

And it's "an LSU player", bro.

This shite has absolutely nothing to do with the Saints. Tiger rant or MSB would have been the right place for this breaking news. All these "former" LSU player threads have no place here. Why the frick do posters still think the Saints board deserves to be littered with these shitty threads? Oh, and "because it's an LSU forum" is not a valid argument so leave that shite at the door please. There's a reason for dedicated boards in the left hand column. I suggest using it.

This is exactly right. Our offense is predicated on a QB who is lithe on their feet, accurate and can make quick reads. Mett doesn't fit the MO at all.

LSU will be showing "He's just not that into you" starring Sean Payton, starting tonight, indefinitely.

A waiver wire claim was made by the Chargers, Giants, and the Bengals for a potential quality backup or future starting QB to replace their respective existing QB's. It does not matter what college he attended to be an NFL story. It only matters whether the respective QB can help their teams. You can disagree with me that the Saints don't need this player because he is not talented enough to make the Saints roster. My point was that the Chargers, Giants, and Bengals felt that the QB warranted a waiver claim. The college he went to should not be the issue. So, if the QB played at USC would you be less manic. This is not an LSU story. It is whether the Saints passed on putting in a claim for a QB that Brees could have trained as his future replacement. Why don't you go rant on the Giants and Bengals boards that this is strictly an LSU tiger rant board story. Now, take your vitriol, and GFY.

You sure went out of your way to try and justify this thread. However, you are fricking lying through both your teeth if you spin this any other way than an LSU player angle. frick you, your -way too close to mine username, and your 160 posts.

Now, I know why your so manic about my post. You say I am way too close to your username. Understanding a mentally ill person is the key in knowing their triggers. You are upset about my username with visions of grandeur. You don't like my low post count, as well. Your high post count, for you in particular, brings to mind, the expression, "less posting is more". You may need to engage in less internet small testicle fighting. Go to a boxing gym, put on real gloves and let someone knock you out. You will feel better for it. You may grow a real pair.
