Marques Colston to Michael Thomas

Does this Micheal Thomas deal make M. Colston regret that he should have "went after the big money" to get a bigger payday when he was with us despite him going in the 7th round?
He had the numbers and he gave us his heart and soul on the field.

No wr was getting that money when he was around. A completely different market.

WRs we're making that kind of money then

Yeah, but he still could have challenged for more than what he was getting...

I love Colston. One of my favorites ever. Butttttt, MT is the better player.
Colston was criminally underrated and should have been considered a top 5/pro bowl receiver. He shouldve made at least 2 to 4 lro bowls.
But MT is on another level. They’re similar in functionality (if not style). But MT has the route running, shifty moves, and hands that catch everything.
Colston was a better high point catcher, and was stronger, and probably a little faster. But MT has better everything else almost. His route running and catch % puts him over the top.

I would disagree on all 3 counts

Marques Colston was a beast. He was part of the Superbowl team. Dude played like a TE without fear and had good hands. He was also less of a diva than MT

He also had prime Drew Brees

Faster 40, higher vertical, and more reps at the combine says your wrong. Also the eye test. Lol

7 upvotes for me and 5 downvotes for you says you’re wrong.

Colston was good and underrated but he wasn’t a top 5 WR in the league. That’s very much elite territory like what Thomas is now. That’s why everytime we talk about Brees, most people mention he never had a truly elite WR till Thomas.

And if he wouldn’t have gotten banged up in year 3, his first three seasons stats would look very similar to Thomas’. As it is, Colston had more TDs and a higher Y/C even though he saw 71 less targets
Take Colston’s per target numbers and extrapolate them using Thomas’ 417 targets
259 catches (Thomas 321 catches)
3615 yards (Thomas 3787 yards)
29 TDs (Thomas 23 TDs)
Lotta people thinking old man Colston. Young Colston was a different animal. He had a bunch of big plays down field, catch and runs etc

It is treacherous to try to compare the stats from ‘06 to ‘08 of a player with those of a player for three seasons a decade later in the NFL. The philosophies of offense & defense have changed radically and the supporting casts are completely different.

That definitely has to be considered. Colston played with a clearly better group of receivers so the defense focus couldn’t always focus on him. For Thomas, especially the last two seasons, he by far our no.1 WR so teams knew who to focus on because they knew the ball was going to him.
In addition Brees is still very efficient but he isn’t the same passer (mainly deep ball passer) he was pre-2017.

Marques will allways be a better receiver than Michael because he has a Super Bowl Ring and until then its no compearason.

Thomas had cooks to help in year 1 to be fair.
But he's shown that's he's clearly an elite wr#1
But colston got to work with a bunch of decent receivers.
