This is the first thing that came to mind when I read the report from Loomis.

Rob Ryan loves to use a big OLB who puts a hand in the dirt on certain downs. Its basically another lineman that they call an "OLB".

Larry Holder:

Sean Payton also said Will Smith will start off at OLB. He said it will be similar to where Smith played at right DE.

Doesn't mean he will start or that he's just playing OLB. No need to start panicking(not aimed at anyone in particular).
He definitely looks like he'll be a sub when we want to have 4 big men up front but still use a 3-4. We were pursuing Kruger and he's built similar to Smith(though smaller).
He has covered before(the results not being so good recently but he was better early on in his career) so he does have some technique to do that.
Seems him and Junior will get the first crack at the rush OLB position with Wilson and Butler competing for the strong side spot.
What I don't like is what this means for some of the young guys like Chase Thomas and Broughton. We likely keep 5 OLBs and if Smith stays as an OLB it takes a spot away from someone with potential and youth. Smith is HIGHLY unlikely to be around next year as it's a team option year for over $10 mil cap hit.

I feel like this is a win for all the anti will smith book end 3-4 critics whomever they may be...

GM Mickey Loomis said Will Smith will start off OTAs at outside linebacker. Just spoke to him at Saints HOF golf tournament.
First of all, above doesn't mean the same thing as:
quote:
Will Smith will start as a OLB in OTA's.
The tweet says he will start out as an OLB (may move to DE or ILB or LT, who knows) The title says he will be a starter at OLB. Big difference.
I don't think they will cut Smith IMHO. He's one of those Saints for life the team takes care of. We'll carry him this year and next and then he'll retire.
In all honesty though, I don't mind keeping him. He can play DE on goal line and gives us versatility to bring in a 4-3 DE if we want to go use a package like that on certain downs.

Like I said, he'll be used as a Joker Linebacker in Ryan's scheme...basically another lineman. Maybe a yard off the line sometimes, sometimes with a finger in the dirt.
Posted on 5/20/13 at 9:39 am to Patrick O Rly
By start does he mean begin the season playing OLB, or begin every game on the field as the first OLB playing.
Also if we are playing him over Gallette/Wilson/ Butler that makes me very very scared.

Will Smith may be a better run support OLB than Galette Wilson Butler combo.

Meh. Still think he plays a good bit of DE. Not saying he'll start at either position though.
Edit:
Damn my late reply. And yeah I agree he could be a better option on early downs against the run. Part of the reason Galette and Wilson saw so few snaps is because they got handle more often than not on run downs.

You can read them as the same thing or you can read into it a bit more as the second one saying he'll be a starter, but it certainly doesn't explicitly state that.

True. One has bad grammar......

That's true. I will change the title to make it more clear.

But now people will stop posting their rants.
Taking this as a whole of Smith and what we have elsewhere, it seems like they expect Hicks to move into the starting role and are trying to find Smith a place in the rotation.
This is different from what I thought before when I thought Smith would start at DE and move to OLB on some downs when Hicks came in at his spot.
I still think he'll see a good bit of time between both positions but it seems clear he's on his way out after this year. We pretty much have to not pick up his option and cut Harper/get Harper to take a pay cut just to get close to the cap and we still have to pay Jimmy and DLP.

Nah. Jordan, Bunkley/Jenkins and Hicks are a perfect 3-4 front line IMO.

Agreed. I also think it's good to have vets like Smith, Harper and Vilma showing guys like Butler, Hicks, Jordan, Wilson, Gallett, Vacarro and Rufus how to be professionals.
