Looking at Spotrac's Saints 2024 salary cap

Trying to understand how they get out from under an 89 million deficit just to get above the cap.
Obviously guys like Peat, Maye, Mathieu are rip for cutting but that doesn't save you much. Pennys comparatively speaking.
in 2023 they saints restructured everyone they could like Ram, Lat, Cam, etc.
What else is there that can be done?
Can Carr be renegotiated instead of restructured? Why would he do it?
What a shite show. Spotrac 2024 Saints

Imagine thinking Mickey doesn’t plan the cap more than 1 year at a time

It’s gonna get worse for a long time before it gets better

Without a doubt the most concerning issue is that we are continuing to add to our future cap and trading future picks and the results are a bad team with a losing record who’s also one of the oldest teams in the nfl

I know right? He’s done such an amazing job of being proactive.

I don't assume that Loomis doesn't know how to manipulate the cap. I am saying I do not understand.
What you're thoughts on how it gets done? And done in a way that there is an end to the restructures at some point in the future.

He doesn’t even think a year ahead when trading away picks…remember when it never occurred to him the Jalen Carter pick might be good?

He knew Carter was gonna be there a year ahead of time?

Firstly, understand that Spotrac is only estimating the actual cap number for 2024. So it may be give or take from $89M we're actually over by.
Second, understand that the Saints HAVE to restructure/extend to create cap room. They could CUT every player on the roster that generated a positive cap number and they would not be compliant. It is not an option. They must restructure.
The Saints will almost assuredly do all of these:
Restructure Ramcyzk
Restructure Hill
Restructure Kamara
Restructure McCoy
Restructure Granderson
Restructure Lattimore
Restructure Ruiz
Restructure Jordan
Restructure Maye
Restructure TM7
Restructure Johnson
Restructure Demario
If they do all of these, we immediately gain $87M in cap space, which is very close to under the cap. This also does not account for any ghost years they may add, which could increase our savings. Yes, it kicks the can more on some of these guys, and makes us essentially stuck with them, but that's the only way this team can operate at the moment.
The Carr Option
Restructure Carr - $23M savings
This one is tougher. Carr's contract currently is actually, contrary to popular belief, very favorable. We can get off him without too much heartburn after the 2024 season as long as we DON'T restructure him here. If they restructure him, though, it becomes a lot tougher to get off him. Hoping we pass on this one.
Misc Options
Peat and MT are on expiring contracts that accelerate their hits if they leave in FA. $18M for MT and $14M for Peat. We could save on these hits by extending them and having a different cap hit for this year.
So if you napkin math this, you can see that if they wanted, the Saints could create over $100M in cap space very easily. Also shoutout to Nick Underhill for putting all the numbers together.

Can Carr be renegotiated instead of restructured
Bite the bullet. Cut everybody. Suck for a few years. Get high draft picks and start over

both of these need to be sent packing and not restructured, no matter the cost, they must not be on the team next year

i dont think we should restructure carr unless its at backup QB rates because that is what he is for us, a decent backup QB.

The Saints have to get under the salary cap limit at some point in the spring of 2024. Cutting players in most instances does not mean lowering that cap number. Quite the opposite many players will count more against that cap number if you cut or trade them than the will if they are kept on the roster.
Understanding this you can quickly see that

Is not an option.

Disagree, i think they should consider keeping peat. He is our only serviceable LT, and he has been pretty good there.

The line does seem to have improved with peat at lt. Now I want Thomas on the first river boat leaving Nola

That's certainly not how Spotrac is calculating it. At best if you restructure everyone available to be restructured except Carr you save a little north of $53M.
I agree that restructuring Carr is a bad idea unless there is no other way. But if you did you'd save another $21.5M but still be in a $14M hole.
This is what I don't understand. Spotrac is a pretty reliable site for all sports cap numbers and cap manipulation and it's still not getting you close. This is why I think some contracts will have to be renegotiated instead of reduructured. As in what they did with Peat and Winston, basically tearing up the old one and writing a new one but that can't happen unless both parties are in agreement to initiate the process.

Carr will be restructured, tying him to the organization even longer, setting the franchise back from the ability to rebuild. Until Loomis is gone, this franchise has no future.
Posted on 12/26/23 at 12:25 pm to BigTigerJoe
You can get to 30M under without touching Carr:
Restructure all of the big contracts
Cut Hurst
Post June 1 cut: Thomas, Peat, Winston
If you can’t trade up it would be the perfect year to trade down to a team like KC who’d want to come up for Brock Bowers. Bring in a big draft class with an emphasis on SPEED on defense
