The New Orleans Saints needed some linebacker depth to assist All-Pro Demario Davis. Well, they did so with a former second-round pick.
Jaylon Smith signed a one-year deal with New Orleans last week. However, he's already making an impression as he saw reps with the first team defense on Thursday.
All-Pro Demario Davis is battling back from a calf issue, which at one time had D'Marco Jackson, a fifth-round pick from 2022 at the top of the linebacker depth chart for the Saints. That made the Smith signing pretty much a necessity for the Saints, especially after a visit with veteran Anthony Barr didn't result in a deal.
After Smith missed his rookie campaign due to the devastating knee injury he suffered in his final collegiate game, he logged 498 tackles, two interceptions, nine sacks, 20 pass breakups, six forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries for the Dallas Cowboys.
Smith was released by the Cowboys in 2021. After a few games with the Green Bay Packers that year, Smith signed with the New York Giants. Last season, Smith logged 88 tackles in 13 games with 11 starts for them.
The Saints don't need Smith to be a Pro Bowl-type player or anything, just a solid veteran that can contribute alongside Davis.

I'll be honest, I don't hate this. I still think he might have some run.

He probably has 1 or 2 more years left at best. Hopefully we can get a legit 2023 out of him.

He had almost 7 tackles a game, and more if you figure in stats from games he started. Not Pro Bowl numbers, but maybe the difference in games that matter (esp if injury bug bites)

Isn't he the one that lit up Kamara a few years ago?

Yes. He made a dirty head-to-head hit on Kamara in 2018 when we played the Cowboys.

Spotrac just released Jaylon Smith & Darrel Williams' cap #'s - 940 k for both.
That's how you bargain bin shop. Vet league minimum.

Former pro bowler starts over Baun. Not really news.

When will people realize that tackles alone aren't indicative of productive and strong linebacker play? Dude had a coverage grade of 44.9.
Stephone Anthony had 112 tackles as a rookie and rarely saw the field after that because he was always making the tackles 5 yards after he was supposed to. Dogshit in coverage, always out of position.
Colby Bockwoldt had damn near a hundred tackles during the Katrina season and was out of the league 2 years later.
Tackle stats don't mean anything.

Agreed. The casuals continue to try to point to his tackles but he legit has not been good as of late and we aren’t in a good position if he’s playing meaningful snaps
