Not sure how realistic it is to get him, but he would instantly make this defense better if he were signed

Yep

New Orleans Saints

Cap Space: $8.8 million

Why the Saints make sense: The Saints would need to overcome some financial hurdles to become legitimate players in the Collins sweepstakes, but he would provide an immediate boost to the secondary. Collins would be a significant upgrade over Kurt Coleman, and join a secondary that includes All-Pro caliber cornerback Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Williams. Collins would push the Saints closer to NFC supremacy.

Oh baby, I just smiled reading that.

New York Giants cornerback Eli Applehas received a clean slate from the team's new regime. He's also been given a reprieve from teammate Landon Collins, who called Apple a "cancer" late last year.

"We talked. Definitely we talked. We've definitely buried the hatchet a while ago," Collins said on a conference call with reporters. "That's my guy, my brother. I'm always going to have his back. We knew what kind of caliber player he is. He knows what kind of caliber player I am. We're just trying to get to work and make this season go."

quote:

"I'm glad to see him back," Collins said. "He's a great corner. He's very smart. I love that he comes up and lays the boom on guys and he's a great coverage guy. We need him. We're glad to have him back."

I know. Coleman was a major liability in Carolina before the Saints signed him.

Collins, like the rest of the Giants’ defense, didn’t have his best season in 2018, but we’ve seen enough in the past to know what he’s capable of. Collins is one of the games premier box safeties and teams could even covet his skills in a nickel linebacker role. In his best season in 2016, Collins led all safeties with 46 stops.

Kurt Coleman was a poor signing by the Saints in last year’s free agency period, and he will likely be released to free up $4 million in salary cap space. Combine that with another regressing safety (Marcus Williams) and you’ve got a clear opening for Collins in the Saints defense, despite an ascendant talent in the rotation (Vonn Bell). All three players can coexist, and very possibly grow together.

If he's available, Saints should run-not walk-to sign Landon Collins

As much as I would love to see this, I hope that it doesn’t happen for his own sake. He’s made too much of a turn to let previous demons back into his life being back home.

Yeah. He said before his draft that he didn't want to be in Nola. Too much distraction and bad influences for him.

I think part of him turning his life around after getting kicked off the team at LSU was getting away from home and the people that brought him down. Not saying he isn’t a stronger person this many years later, but who knows.

Collins is not worth the potential cost. We have more pressing needs.

Fair enough. I still stand by avoiding any risk of locker room issues, though. The Saints of late haven't had the best luck with big time free agent signings in the secondary (think Byrd and Browner). I do believe Collins is a better player than both were at their respective times of signing though.

I also tend to agree with NOSHAU in that the secondary definitely was not a weak spot with the team this year, and won't be next year if everyone stays healthy and PRob comes back. I'd much rather see that money spent on a proven WR2 like Beasley, Humphries, or Tate. Spending it there solves one of the team's major weaknesses.

Pass defense was arguably the team's weakness link last season.

You really think our secondary was a weaker link than not having a WR2 or pass catching TE?

Until Apple got here absolutely. After he settled in they improved alot but for some reason seemed like they regressed in the playoffs.

We were ranked 29th out of the 32 NFL teams in pass defense.

Offensively, the issues began as injuries to starters on the offensive line piled up. Prior to those injuries, the offense was pretty unstoppable.
