Everything I ever read leading up to the draft said he lacked speed at the RB position
Hmm ... now that I look back at it, he ran a 4.61 at the combine, which is not fast. My comments were based on my perceptions based on how he played. I could also care less about the great Hester debate.

Hester's speed was actually pretty good.
4.65 at his fastest is "pretty good" speed?
um, no
nothing against hester, but this statement is false

His quickness, however, was poor. There is no doubt in my mind that Hester would win a 40 against Scott, but his inability to cut and avoid defenders is what kept Hester from being an elite RB.
i don't disagree with this either
this is why he always had to lower his shoulder and sacrifice yards in the open field
these "BOOM" plays, however, made him the rant legend that he is (along with being white)
*ETA: hester's greatest attribute is his versatility. he's a great (however, short) H-back. he can run ok, catch ok, block ok. he's a jack of all trades and a master of none. i loved hester in 2006. when we stopped using him to run exclusively, he took off.

I have no clue why we stopped the pass to Hester in the flat in 07.

He lacks NFL speed for and does have issues with his weight
i think you are wrong on that. he might not be the fastest back but he seems to have a good burst at hitting the hole quickly. on the weight issue, the kid is ripped. i have never heard of that type of issue with him, all i have ever heard is he takes real good care of himself and eats and drinks very healthy

that's more of a FB route, and we stopped using him at FB

I know that this is picky, but Hester's best time at the combine was 4.59 and he had previously been timed as low as 4.49. Maybe that isn't "pretty good" -- "adequate" or "decent" would have been better word choices.
My point remains the same, though. His speed was OK. CS is a better running back today than Hester because of his quickness. Many college football fans don't understand the difference between speed and quickness and over-rely on 40 times when evaluating running backs.

i don't remember him cracking 4.6

not valid until the real scouts do it
also, hester didn't run at LSU's pro day, so based on that we have to assume he was happy in the mid 4.6s

the kid is a good ball player. that is what counts. and that is why he is in the league.
but for everyone that disagrees with sfp......since he doesn't remember hester running better than a 4.6, then we should all assume he ran mid 4.6.
you disagree with me, so we have to assume you are right. that is the dumbest arguement i have ever heard. and you might be correct. just a stupid reason

a link to a legit reporting of his 4.59 is all i was asking for

Hester ran 4.59 at the combine
So, no, I don't think he was happy in the mid 4.6s.
Look, I'm not on the committee to enshrine Hester as the "great white hope" who can defeat the supposed conspiracy to keep whites from becoming NFL running backs. At the same time, though, I don't think his abilities or contributions should be dismissed. Hester's value came because of his strength, vision to see the hole, ball security, receiving ability, and pass-blocking. He was the most complete back that we had in 2007 and, in my opinion, deserved to start.
I also think that Charles Scott will be a better running back this year for LSU (and a much better pro prospect) than Hester was -- but it won't be because Scott is faster, because I'm pretty sure he isn't.

i don't think scott is automatically faster, even if hester ran a 4.65. i think that's scott's range as of now
scott is just more explosive in the short area (much better burst) and is a lot quicker
SFP and hester is funny. in 2006 many rantards were mad that i said he should be playing more FB and being a real 3rd down option (b/c of his receiving ability). then he starts in 2007, becomes the great white hope, and i get mad b/c i think we had 2 better backs AND that hester was most effective in his 2006 role. so i become the king hater, supposedly
