Kwon Alexander has not stopped surprising in his comeback from a season-ending Achilles injury.

It’s not just that he’s back out there in a New Orleans Saints uniform less than eight months after tearing his Achilles. It’s that he’s as capable as he is at this juncture.

“I did not think he’d be where he is right now,” linebackers coach Michael Hodges said. “We’re controlling him right now because we want to be safe. But he’s a guy that is so much fun to be around and so eager to play ball, he is not allowing another injury to keep him from the field.”

Saints coach Sean Payton offered the same sentiment as Hodges, saying Alexander is ahead of schedule in his recovery while adding, “We’ve just got to be smart and patient.”

It has to be encouraging, then, to see what happened Tuesday while the Saints were playing it safe: Alexander played with the Saints’ first team defense during full team drills and flashed almost immediately, breaking up a pass intended for Latavius Murray.

It was the latest in a quick succession of remarkable moments for Alexander in his recovery from an Achilles tendon he tore on Christmas of last year.

Tuesday marked two weeks since Alexander re-signed with the Saints. First he was working off to the side with the strength staff, then he was in uniform and going through walk-throughs and individual drills with the rest of the linebackers.

Now he’s participating in full-speed drills with the rest of his teammates.

Hodges said Alexander’s rapid recovery is not just a physical feat.

“Smart people heal faster, because they understand the process and they’re able to put away some of the emotions that are tied into that,” Hodges said. “Because that’s a traumatic event, and traumatic events take a mental part to get over.

“He’s a smart person who has been through these things, he’s mature, and ultimately that guy loves ball as much as any player I’ve ever been around. So that’s how he approaches his rehab.”

A few people need to come and eat some crow.

Saying he would be most of the year.

I'd be surprised if Kwon played in the pre-season. Even if he's 100% ready to go...I still hope the coaches work him in slowly & safely.

He should probably only play until the regular season gets here, & even then...I hope he rotates with someone until the coaches feel very confident that it's finally time to unleash him.

Dude tore his achilles less than 9 months ago, & that injury is no joke. This recovery time is absurd, & says a lot about Kwon.

You can put me in the number of people believing Kwon would have a lost season. Let’s not pop the champagne yet though this is still a player with a long history of injury.

If kwon is healthy this may be shaping up as the best LBing group since Vilma/Fujita/Shanle.

Davis, Kwon, Warner, Ellis, Baun a nice group.

Hansen & Dowell have been looking good as well.

I'm happy that our young guys stepped up at DT & LB. We needed this desperately.

I thought he would be ready for week 8...give or take a couple of weeks.

The best thing about the whole situation is that his 2021 cap # is 987 k. That's a fricking joke.

You must have missed seeing what the defense looked like last year when Kwon was there. Maybe you should pay attention more closely

I just wish they had retained janoris and feel like they could have. Janoris completes this D and I think gives it a chance to be an elite unit league if any of the year 1/2 guys can be big contributors.

Should we have retained Malcolm Brown?

Malcom Brown, Janoris, & Emmanuel Sanders hurt the most imo...even more than Brees (age) & Rankins (nasty injury).

If we had those 3 we would win 70% of our games with average QB play. But there is a chance Winston plays above avg. and the defense plays lights out. Then we win 85-90% which is what we have been doing for a few years.
Our d-line, linebackers, safeties, o-line, and running backs will be elite. Worried about kicking for sure would have our special team as elite but Lutz is hurt.

Kwon will start if he's healthy but, based on how the other LBs looked, he won't play nearly every snap. It's still early but Baun and crew looked like they're ready to jump into the mix.
